91 Suzuki Kingquad 300 low compression, wont start

Hey guys hope everyone is well. I need sum advice or help. Anyways I already rebuilt the carb however I noticed that the carb is spitting sum gas towards the airbox and i did a compression test and i only got 50lbs what should the compression be for these lil monsters bc 50 lbs isn't a lot I figure it will b around 100lb or so. So I'm thinkn a piston,bad valves? it does smoke white but I can get it to run but hard to start and I got to keep the slide all the way open on the carb to get it to even run but once I let the slide down it cuts off so its not even driveable right now plz help me guys trying to get it running b4 we get snow

Thanks ox I knew it was to low. so what u think bad piston rings or bad valve? It is spitting a lil gas out towards airbox, so I'm guessing air is sumhow getting out and pushing sum gas out of carb.

valves and timing can also be the prob... i would check and see how tight the valves are adjusted ... if you have a service manual on it ...it will tell you how to do this ... and you can also check the timing that way ... it almost sounds like the timing chain might have jumped 1 tooth ..

Thanks guys unfortunately I dnt have a book so I dnt know how to check timing and valves I'm pretty much doin this with out a book and mainly guess wrk. It does have around 5k miles on her and the recent owner didn't maintain it very well. Any tips on how to check that stuff. If I have to break it down anyone know where I can get a good performance cam for it and get it bored to next size hopefully that will give me sum extra power

Also how do u put motor on tdc and how do u know when its on tdc as I know it has to be on tdc to set/check valves

So I need to take the valve cover off to line it up or? I kno how to put tdc on a car but not familiar with atvs. Thanks in advance

So today I set my valves however still a no go. I set intake at .004 and exhaust at .006 now I'm geting backfire thru the carb and cnt get it to start at all also put a new plug in. Any other ideas guys? And yes it was on tdc

my bayou 300 needs a good battery to run, i guess it needs the extra power

you mite want to check that.

So I set my valves again and it cranked up first time it ran about 2 mins then cut off I got valves set int .004 exhaust .005 I put it on tdc by taking plug out and feeling for air then use the hand starter to put piston on top I got needle jet about 2.5 turns out should I turn it in some so I can get it to idle. And got new spark plug gapped at .26 any tips guys or ideas what I should do or check

What's up ox. Naw I dnt know y it shut off. When I reset the valves she cranked as soon as I turned it over. I do have my air mix screw turned all the way in til I can get it to idle and get it set however when it did crank it didn't idle high with the air mixture all the way in which it shud have. I'm thinking its fuel problem bc when I took old plug out it was extremely black and had residue on it as well so burning rich right?. I got the needle jet set at 2.5 turns out frm seated. It's almost bck to same problem it will crank if I raise the slider half way up to give it more air

I just thought about sumthn the needle that goes in the slide which way does it go in? Do the grooves and clip need to b up or down? I think this is my problem its to cold and dark to mess with it right now so I'm gonna try it tomm

I got it to idle and kinda wnts to bog when I give it gas then after playing with it a while I can give it gas however when I give it full throttle for about a min she will cut off and I noticed the float bowl is completely dry! Any ideas ? Bad float or bad float spacing or sumthn

Checked compression its at 95psi now so better then b4. bout to check timing shortly gotta figure out how to check that I got plastic off I kno how to line cam gear but not crankshaft part I'm sure its simple

Could be bad fuel lines or fuel filter/pump. Pilot screw setting might be closed too. And your going to want the valves a 6 thousandths and maybe even 7 thousandths for the exhaust valve because it will expand a little with the heat.

And make sure you run premium fuel in there because anything else is terrible on the carbs

you need atleast 3 turn out for idle. the smaller 250cc needed 2.5 out. use the choke to start and then shut off. you might have a clogged jet clean it with a single wire from a steel wire brush.

I hvnt had much time but i did put a new float in it. Still bog when I give it full throttle but Idles good my book said pilot needs to be 2.5 out but il try 3 and readjust valves again il let u kno what happens when I get a chance to mess with it

      Ok, so I bought this scream of a deal the other day - a 94 King Quad 300 for $40.00.  It's been sitting outside with no carburetor on it for about a year.  Its rusty, missing some parts, wiring is all cut up and spliced etc.  No seat, no racks but the plastic is all there minus the headlight housing.  Anyway, who can pass up a $40.00 quad right?  I get it home and looked at the sight glass for oil level, it's about 1/2 oil and 1/2 water.  I drain it, refill it and turn the motor by hand (recoil starter is missing) and it turns over just fine.  I worked on the wiring for about an hour and got it to turn over with the electric starter and got enough of it sorted out to get a spark.  Did a quick compression test, 70 lbs.  Wet test bumped it up to 90.  Ok, so rings and cylinder washed out with water for a year, not too surprised.  I thought 'what the hell' and sprayed some starting fluid in it and it ran for about 2 seconds - enough to show  it's got life.  Since then the compression has gotten worse, I can't get enough pressure to activate the carb diaphragm, therefore no fuel pump either.  The compression is now around 60.
        Anyway, my question is....is it worth it to try to get this thing going?  I tore the top end down today and the cam and one of the rockers is pretty worn.  I figured a top end job would be about $100 or so, depending on the condition of the cylinder but I'll probably have to put a cam and rockers in it as well.  Doing some research on ebay I figure I'll have to spend about $500-$700 to make the whole machine right again.  Much less just to make it run and use as-is but I won't really like it until it's right.  I don't mind doing the work, I actually enjoy it but I'm concerned about what all that water did to the rest of the internals, I can't really test it all out until I can make it run.
      I know it's a basket case but I'm not into it much at all, even if I do the top end and find something else wrong I'm still not out much.  I'm leaning toward ordering the top end parts and going from there unless you can convince me otherwise - any way to check the rest of the internals without tearing it down?  I plan on flushing the oil cooler before I do another oil change, I've drained it twice now and it gets milky almost immediately just turning the starter - I suspect the oil cooler is polluted badly.
       
      I'll get some pictures today if anyone want to see them.

      Hello everyone, i have 2000 Polaris Trail Blazer 300 I’ve been stumped on for weeks. I’m having a lot of issues starting the quad. I cleaned the carb spotless because I thought it was a carb issue and bought a new fuel line because it wasn’t getting fuel. The carb gets fuel perfectly fine now but it won’t start. The spark plug I a little worn out but it’s good enough for just one start. The only time it does “start” is when I spray starter fluid into the carb. But it never stays on. It’ll start for a bout a second then just die out immediately even if you’re giving it some throttle and the choke is on. I have no clue what I should do. If you need more information, have questions, or have any slight idea what the issue would be and how I could resolve it. Please reply ASAP. Thank you.

      OK ya'll.My son bought this thing and was told its a Kaw Bayou 300. Maybe. I cant find any numbers on it.The one tag I did find its so faded as to be unreadable. Its a long shot but maybe someone can help ID it. Thanks in advance.

      I have a 2000 Arctic Cat 300 4 wheeler. I have been having some carburetor issues. So i bought a new carb. Now I'm having these issues. The unit will start and idle fine, when i go to accelerate it wants to cut off. So i checked to make sure it was getting gas and the fuel filter will be full of gas and then once the carb opens the filter drains down and will not refill quick enough to run. So i checked to make sure gas was flowing to the filter and it is flowing fine through the line. I remove the filter and run the gas line directly to the carb and the engine idle fine and then it will run good as i ride it for about 10 minutes then it will start with the same issues again i cannot accelerate enough to move the 4 wheeler. Every time i accelerate the unit will cut off. What is wrong with this thing. My 400 Arctic Cat is doing the same thing except it will backfire, I'm lost i have tried everything i know to do, what am i missing here. Thanks for your help

      I’m looking for new replacement shocks (front & rear.) on my 1997 Kawasaki Bayou 300 2x4. New OEM shocks are upwards of $400. I haven’t pulled the rims off to check the eyelet to eyelet length but I’m hoping an expert on this site does know( I called Kawasaki direct yesterday and they were of know help.) Any technical help would be appreciated. TY fellow members. Vic
