  1. Not far down at all, somewhere around 50-75ft.
  2. Hey Guys I just wanted to let all you Polaris Sportsman 500 HO owners know what I came across today while working on my bike. I decided to pull the bike out today to start getting it ready for my trip up north next week. When I started it up I noticed the infamous Polaris Sportsman ticking that comes from the front right of the engine. From what I read on all the different forums is that the ticking is from the water/oil pump. I also read that this sound is normal on most SP500 HO's and so I thought I would have to live with the sound. But what I did notice when I started the bike was the noise was a bit louder than I last remembered it to be. So I decided to changed the oil and I followed the procedure in the manual right to the letter! I used a K&N oil filter and 2 liters of Amsoil 0W40 4 stroke synthetic. When I was done changing the the oil I pinched off the vent line to the top of the oil tank to prime the oil pump and started the bike. I held the vent pinched for around 15 seconds and released it untill I heard the air release sound. Now the pump is primed and the oil is flowing like it supposed to be but the infamous ticking is still there but a little quieter. This difference in sound had got me thinking about what could be causing the noise and what I came up with is a air pocket that is trapped in the oil pump. You may think that sounds a little far fetched for air to be trapped in the oil pump, but what I did next seems to have solved my ticking noise. I started the bike and I pinched the oil return line that comes from the pump and goes to the tank. I only pinched it off with a pair of needle nose pliers for a few seconds at a time. Each time I pinched the hose the tone of the engine would change and sound as if it was loading up. I also noticed the hose expanding slightly from the oil pressure, when this happened I would release the hose and you could hear the oil rushing back into the tank. After doing this about 5 times my ticking was 95% quiter if not completly gone. Now I don't know if this will work on everyones bike but it seemed to work on my bike and I now love the sound of my bike, it sounds like new again! P.S. If anything changes on my trip next week I will post back my findings. I hope this helps! Rich
  3. She's all good now boys, all it needed was a few hours of riding to seal the leak. So all is good but now I have another problem with the front diff. I plan on making another thread about this new problem. Thanks for all the help!

  5. Morning all, not Friday yet but oh so close that you can just smell it! Smells like MUD and BUD to me!
  6. Good to hear you got it solved. No lube on Polaris clutches, if they are sticking its because there dirty or worn out and will be in need of a rebuild.
  7. Check your clutches! Sounds like there sticking. I had the same problem with my bike. Dry steep hill in high gear the bike would cough and sputter but if I put it in low gear there was no problem. If the clutches are not shifting properly it would be like trying to clime a hill in third gear of stick shift car. The bikes power will die off, so you give it more throttle to compensate for the loss and you will then have a bit of black smoke come out the tailpipe and a strong smell of gas from the rich mixture. This will lead you to belive it's a fuel or carb issue when infact it's a clutch issue.
  8. Right on the money Tinkerman! I pulled the starter and the brushes and armatures were dirty. After a good cleaning the starter ran like new.

  10. Yep still leaking but thats due to my oun fault. I haven't taking the bike out for a long ride yet because the fields are too wet and the farmers would shoot ya if they caught me out there. I'll check it out when i get back after my ATV trip at the end of the month.
  11. I thought that too! I checked for play in the shaft and there was none to be had.
  12. Not a good morning today. My main pc puked from a virus with the Blue Screen Of Death (Stop 0x7B). Now I can't boot in any mode. Just keep getting that Damn BSOD! I tried changing BIOS settings still nothing and now I realized that I don't have a WIN XP recovery disc. AAHH CRRRAAAAAPPPP.
  13. 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO I have the seal changed now but it still leaks a little. I wonder if the seal needs a break in period to conform to the shaft better.
  14. So today I went out to the garage and I noticed a puddle of oil under the bike. What I found was a leak in the Rear Gearbox Input Shaft or (Snorkel Shaft). I know I have to pull the drive shaft out but after that i'm at a loss. If anyone has changed one of these seals before I would appreciate a little help.
