2000 Arctic Cat 300 Fouls plug and runs rough

Recommended Posts

I have posted about this machine before...took it into the shop and spent a couple hundred bucks... they adjusted the carb and put a new plug in. It ran well for a few weeks and now runs rough again. Today the plug was fouled, so I cleaned it well and got it started again, but after a few minutes it was running rough again. I have read about adjusting valves...would that impact my problem? If so, is there a post that describes how?

The first thing we need to know is what is fouling your plugs, gas, oil, are they dry fouled? What does the plug smell like when it gets foulded? Gas or oil? Does it smoke at all? If so what color is the smoke? Are your plugs gapped correctly? Is your air filter clean? Provide as much info as you can, so we can better help you. As far as adjusting your valves goes, there are inspection caps on the front and rear of your valve cover, thes allow you to access the valve adjusters. There is a slotted screw in the end of the rocker arm over the valve, it has a jam nut around it. Loosen the jam nut, adjust the center screw with the proper size feeler guage between the screw and the top of the valve stem. Don't tighten it tight, you want to be able to slide the feeler guage between with just a slight amount of drag. Without moving the adjustment screw, tighten the jam nut. For clearance specs, get a repair manual or call a dealer service department.

I believe it's gas. It doesn't smoke much at all when it runs...what little there is appears black when first starting. Last year replacing the air filter seemed to help. Since then I've cleaned it regularly. It does run better with it off...are they all this touchy with the air filter? First 4 wheeler we've owned. When I tried starting it with the air cleaner off, some gas came out in the air cleaner compartment.

I'm not sure what the connection would be between valve clearance and carb issues, but have seen that conversation elsewhere on here?

There is a link on here for free service manuals, but they only go back to 2003 for my 300. Is that close enough for things like valve clearance?

Part of me just wants to throw in the towel and buy a new carb...

The 300 are a great little motor and and there not a lot that go's wrong with them. 90% of the problems I see with these motor are carb related.

However, the ethonal fuel is causing a lot of problems with older machines not designed for the new fuel.

First off the intire fuel system should be cleaned, fuel lines replaced and good inline fuel filter installed. The tank should be cleaned and the in tank filters/screens should be replaced. also you should check the tank valve and make sure it will turn off the fuel flow to the carb. The valve is 12 years old and probably leaking by. Also there cheap to replace. about $20.00 for the new valve and the screens come with it.

You stated that they adjusted the carb. There is only two real adjustments that can be made to this carb. First is the pilot jet, it controls the engine idle mixture and second the float setting which control the level of fuel in the bowl. Everthing else is controlled by preset jetting.

The one other thing I see with these motors is the rubber carb to head adaptor dry rots over time and causes an air leak.

First confirm that you are running the correct plug. NGK DR7EA.

Next for peace of mind do a compression test, should be around 135 psi.

Next a proper cleaning and servicing of the carb. should put everything back to proper order.

I would not run the quad with no air filter, that will cause you nothing but big problems! My old dealer (who is gone now) did not put my intake back on right and it sucked in unfiltered air and the next thing I know I needed a top end rebuild.

Sorry I suck at these forums so if you see this submitted under update status, my bad. Anyhow this is a new shock for a 96 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 it fits my 96 Yamaha Timberwolf 250 4x4 perfectly. Little narrower are the bottom than the original but everything else is perfect. I extended it to almost a half in from full extension because I’m pushing 350 pounds.  It rides and hold me well. So if any of y'allRace driven shock. have been looking for one and didn’t want to do the research here it is.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?

My friends KQ 300 starts fine and runs, as soon as you put it in gear and try to accelerate its bucks and farts like crazy, not moving... I cleaned carb and it worked good for 1 day... now back to same problem.... could it be such as a bent valve????
