Feel pumps are common issue with these year machines. Check for power to the pump if it's ther remove cap and listen when key is turned on should hear pump prime if you hear gas drain back into tank pump is definitely bad

Can you give us more information on. Check engine lighrl and no codes. What is the vehicle doing when the light is on. Also if the vehicle has power steering. Any issues in the 4 wd and power steering could cause the Check engine light to come on but not show any codes on the speedometer. Sometimes the only way to get the code is with a scan tool

Any accessories on the vehicle? if so check for a draw on the battery with the key off. The service manual has instructions on how to test the charging system if the stater tests normal and you have no draws then I would suspect the voltage regulator is bad.

Is the flywheel keyway intatact?. If the keyway is broken can also get an erratic voltage which can take out the regulator/rectifier. Also can cause issues with timing and cam walk. My manual state a 1/4 preload on the spring and that the cover is also a cam thrust plate -
