You can jack the rear wheel up and turn it if it turns a little and stops each way its in gear if its locked solid its the brakes.

Thats great you got it running, the oil burning is probably stuck rings from sitting too long , I would run it a little and see if they come back put a little marvel mystery oil in with the oil. You can also check the compression and see if its good.

Neutral switch would not make the wheels lock, if its not in neutral that would, the neutral switch is just a contact to tell you it is in neutral. Did the neutral light come on when you got it. Sometimes neutral is hard to find you may have to rock it a little while shifting to find it, not sure on yours but on mine I push down to go in reverse while turning a reverse knob, and up to go into first , sometimes I have to pull the gearshift up just a tad to find neutral, if you go too far its in first.

My wife decided instead of working on my heard of 4 wheelers and motorcycles I should put my services to better use and install a granite countertop in the kitchen. I found some she liked at a local building supply salvage store cheap, but they didn't deliver. I had help loading them in my navigator, but when I got home I had no help, I wouldn't ask anyone for help , if they hurt themselves I would feel bad and I know my limits, this job exceeded them greatly, so I had to figure out a way to increase my limitations. I had a few 8 foot tables and I slide them out of the back of the truck fairly easily onto the tables, them started to fabricate, cutout for cooktop and sink, that is where the rolling worktable came in to play. After the cutouts the granite is weak and will crack plus I can't lift an 8 ft piece by myself. I needed a way to get them in the house. I built this frame inside of a little garden trailer the same height as the cabinet so I could roll it up to the cabinet and slide it off with out stressing the weakened granite, granite is not plug and play. The little rolling work table worked so well I just left it together and use it for lots of projects. Now you can laugh!!!!

I think Rotella is a very good oil and would work fine, I know many people that use it in their quad, don't really know why yours calls for 0w40 maybe cold weather, but the difference between 5 and 0 is minimal.

The clutch plates could be stuck , you might be able to push it in gear to unstick them.

I remember those, hadn't seen one in years I don't think they made very many.

Frame actually rusted into and broke, never seen that happen to a Yamaha. Is it completely gone down the whole side or can you repair the rusted out section.

I have also been looking for one, the cheapest iv found is the harbour freight one, wish I would have bought one a few years ago when they were cheap, you would always see them on sale for 299.00, they are on sale now for 499.00. Still a descent price compared to others.

Those are a lot of fun, I rode one in the 80s I think it was made by suzuki ,2 wheel balloon tires and would go faster than I cared to go on those tires. Similar to the Rokon. I think yamaha had one too.

Hows the Polaris working out, I know you have had a few problems, but how do you like it, never see these in my area for sale, but ran across this one, rough shape for 1500.00, so you got a good deal on yours. Yours looks good.

I am working toward replacing the aftermarket carbs on all my ATV, one of them I put on, lesson learned, it just so tempting to pay 35.00 vs 650.00.

I agree completely im battling that right now, I will not buy another with aftermarket carb, that's the first thing I will check.

Did you try Multi-National parts supply, they sell parts for the XY300.

Interesting top 10 list, Polaris has really come a long way to get to number 2. Around here nobody wants them and when you do see them for sale they are selling for really cheap, not sure why, they are nice.

Got the exhaust all delisted and back together, ran out of black high heat paint so I found some red engine enamel probably not my choice but its what I had, may change it later. Still working on the plastics they cleaned up very well but they have had a rough life had one crack that I repaired and a lot of spots where the plastic had been flexed and its a lighter color there only way to hide that is paint and I don't really like to paint plastics, I have wet sanded from 220 to 5000 grit and they will polish nicely, still not decided what im going to do. The carb will be in tomorrow so I forget this for a while, but I will have to put the back plastic on to fit a seat to see if it drives. You can see the areas im talking about lower right, middle right and upper left. Oh and don't laugh at my mobile work table, there is an interesting story behind that.

So you want to put a 185 rear end onto a 200m and them making a fat cat out of the 185. You will need a different swing arm that will take a wide tire, you will need to do some measuring and visit junkyards to find one that will work. As far as mounting shocks you will probably have to do some welding to make it work unless you find a swinger with shocks that will bolt right up.

The one that came out is in bad shape, that's certainly part of your problem.
