2002 Honda TRX400EX couple questions

well i went and bought my first sport quad. a 2002 honda TRX400EX quad for 600 bucks. it needs a new bearing carrier, tail light, battery box, battery, airbox lid, muffler, chain and 1 more set of brake pads. this is it i just got it home.

my questions are,

1. on the rear end of all the 400ex's on the left hand side i see a cyclinder type deal on the sub frame what is that since mine doesnt have it?

2. when i put an after market exhaust on here do i need to rejet? since all these pipes ive been looking at so no need to rejet blah blah blah

3. on the airbox theres a 2nd tube running from the box to the top of the motor what does that do and do i need it? since theres no filter on it so i didnt figure it did anything.

the cylinder thing should be the stock tool container ...and yes you should rejet and the the tubes slould be the air intake tubes 1 should run up under the gas tank if i remember rite and the other i think is a vent that should go to the vent on the rear top of the motor case and there is a drain tube that is in the bottom of the air box that is to let and water out ...

The other hose that comes from the top ofthe motor that goes into the airbox takes motor fumes and blowby and reburns them. There should be a check valve but not 100% sure

As CK said a rejet is a must. No room for error on an air cooled. 400ex come from the factory lean so any additional air flow needs added fuel. Without it pinging or burnt valves can occur.

the round container you see is the fractory tool box the the tube you are talking about is a vent to releave the crank case pressure and recirulates the air back into the air intake boot alot of people will disconnect this and replce it with a small micro filter that can be bought at oreilys auto parts do not leave open drit and grimm will result in engine damage. it suggested to jet most carbs with after market pipes dealing with air/fuel and back pressure that is needed to make any motor to run.

Just aquired this Honda 4514. I had heard of them and seen them but had never really looked at one. Amazing machine from the 90s.
It has a 14 HP inline 2 cylinder engine. A cute little fan like the old school cars had and a little radiator. It has a timing belt on the back of the engine running the cam and a water pump. Just like a miniature car engine with  electronic clutches to turn blades on and off. Pretty hight tech for the 90s not a small thing and built like a tank weighs in at 600 pds hydrostatic trans. I have found out that almost anything you have to do to it the engine has to come out starter timing belt water pump. Very expensive parts i think most got junked for that reason, i did find out they were built by John Deere except for the honda engine.
Does anyone here have any expierience with these.

Hey all. Just came across the site, looks pretty cool. Me and my family have always rode atv's and love to get together and ride. Utah has some good riding, but I would like to hear about some other great riding areas. Throw some at me.

So.. it a weird one.. The quad surges as you go down the road. By the looks of my tracks, it's one wheel only. High range, low range, 2 wd , 4 wd.. It just doesn't matter..
You can see in the pictures the marks it leaves. That was in a straight line, with hardly any acceleration.
      Any ideas?

Okay, so I have a 2002 Rubicon 500…bought it last year and it sat for several months until I put a new rear axle in, FINALLY got that done and was super excited to finally have my wheeler going, just to notice a strong gas odor. Popped the seat off and sure enough, pouring gas from the carb overflow. Fast forward a few more weeks and get the new carb and get it in, no leak! Yay. Except now I have no spark. 😒 I’ve tried another plug and checked and am getting no power to the coil pack. I’ve read and read and mostly what I’ve found is ECU, which is fine…but I like to exhaust all avenues before buying the more expensive parts just because I don’t wanna spend the money and it have ended up being something simple that I overlooked because I was trying to rush. 😂 I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I read on another post that someone had similar issues with theirs and it was the sensor on the side of the carb, just a thought since this literally happened after I put the new carb on. It also displays “- -“ on the display screen where it should show the gear position.
