  1. haha! yea I bought my 6in light from my friend for $14 the day I got the bike. The same friend found me a 04 sportsman 500 not running for $1200 (needs a stater and a battery) so I cant wait to get it fixed up with a lift kit, led headlights, and bigger tires....might even put a snorkel on it if I like it enough....will put pics on here as I'm doin stuff! I'm going to pick it up this thursday (he lives in AL and I live in VA). heres a pic he sent me:
  2. I actually watched that YouTube vid already before I started the tear-down, but I will watch it again.
  3. so I went back out to double check it and turned the engine over one more time because the T mark was off about 1mm from the mark on the cover, and when the flywheel showed the T mark again, I checked the valves and the intake was pushed down about 1/4in and the exhaust 1/8in. I readjusted the valves, turned the engine over again only to find that the valves were loose like before (1/4in gap in. and 1/8in gap ex.). I turned the engine over numerous times only to find that the valves are tight every other turn and then loose. is something warped maybe?
  4. just checked the valve clearance. Intake (I am not joking) had about 3/8in clearance on it and exhaust had about 1/8in. I'm not sure how it got that way, the lock nuts were tight. The only thing I could think of was maybe I didnt adjust them at top dead canter? I made sure the bike was at top dead center and checked the timing again. ok thanks! heres the post where I said my tool wasnt right
  5. there arnt any washers on the rockers. the intake was the one that was supposed to be smaller than what I had, could I just tun the adjuster in maybe a quarter turn and run it again to see if it helps? would that be too risky... I cant work on the bike after today until next week
  6. I didnt run it that much cause I didnt know if it was tearing itself up. Its still burning off the WD40 in the cylinder and on the muffler. The cam and chain looked brand new and I could hardly budge the chain. I think clearance is probably the issue... would I be able to find a valve clearance tool small enough at a auto parts store?
  7. could it be something wrong with the voltage regulator? I just looked it up and a guy with a bayou 220 had the same problem and he tested the battery and it went to 25+ volts while at the same time, the engine started knocking... well, i dont think that would be the case because the battery is about dead on my bike (it would hardly turn the engine over after about the 5th time of trying to start it.
  8. valve might be too lose. I said earlier that the valve tool I got didnt go as small as what the intake called for. I used the smallest one it had and tightened it down to get it a little smaller... I guess I need to order a smaller valve tool? Its a pretty noticeable tick-like sound, doesnt sound like skirt-slap. As for the chain tensioner, it is fairly tight-- how tight should it be?
  9. I also was running it earlier without the gas valve on soooo
  10. update: I backed the air screw out and it runs now (choke or no choke) but it sounds as if its knocking/slapping in the head...?
  11. So I wanted to start a thread about modifications on ATVs OR SXSs that makem look sick or run better. It can be any modification from new handlebar grips to a winch to an added lightbar, but I was focusing on tries and rims. Here are some of my simple additions to my Bayou 300: I put looker front shocks on it, added a 2500 winch, replaced the headlight with a blinding 6in light bar, and added new and bigger rims and tires: and just for clarification, all the pics are of it with the lightbar on it, the last one is of the stock headlight.
  12. I'm figured getting mine running would be a good start.....
  13. hondas are low maintenance but have no performance (like I said earlier, Yamaha rocks) But thanks for doing more than counting..... sportsmans are awesome
  14. it should be 10 likes on your replys to get a manual instead of 10 replys... maybe that would work better? nicely put 8 to 10? (I cant count either)
  15. preach it! lol I posted like 50 replys before I even got around to needing a manual... Its definitely worth the wait!! and thanks to the folks helping me out on this site!!
  16. LOL haha got any pics of the bike? I'm a Polaris nerd (even more of a Yamaha nerd tho)(just sayin)
  17. WD40 works wonders on exhaust bolts. I was trying to replace an engine on a ditch-witch (I gave up-- those things are a pain n the caboose to work on) but anyway, I didnt use WD40 on the blots and broke one of them off just recently, I did a engine tear-down on my bayou and used WD40 literally 5 mins before removing the bolts.....they slid right off
  18. where are good ATV trails/campgrounds near southwest VA?
