ok wylde1, u got the same quad I have....but mines a 2000,,,starter is on the bottom in the front???? Need to replace it....

yes it is on the bottom and in the front. Mine needs to be replaced too, but I have been using the recoil. It usually only takes 2 or 3 pulls so its not a big deal.

It doesn't look difficult to take off, but I don't have the money for a new one, so I haven't actually looked too hard at it.

should get the new starter in a few days........mine used to start easy (1 or 2 pulls) too but is hard to start lately.....:confused:after the bendix was replaced so I could use the elect start and it started right up with elec start when I got it home then stopped the engine to fill tank with gas and it would not start again for about 1 hour, lots of pulling and bruised knuckles (really, ouch!):aargh: Have to adj carb, which was just cleaned, but too much effort to start with recoil....replaced selenoid too cuz it was just clicking.....and yes, charged battery....need elect start to adjust carb....will let u know how starter replacement goes....:skeptic:thanks for the input!!

Hey Wylde1, replacing the starter was easier than I thought.........since I don't have a service manual yet (but have one I bought online coming any day now) I went online and searched how to replace it,,,,came up with quite a few answers, most were saying to take the clutch out to access........I have pretty small hands so this was the way I did it....drain gas tank, turned quad on its left side balanced the handgrip on a 5 gallon bucket which was upside down so quad did'nt fall over , remove recoil and heat shield, locate bolts, remove red starter wire, then bolts, tapped with rubber mallet to remove, replace gasket, rebolt and reverse order everything else......did'nt have a clutch puller from how the internet said to do it and when I looked at the diagram the bolts for the starter were on the right side of the bike anyway, so just looking saved me the hassle. I was done in 1 hour, maybe less. BUT, when it started on first try, it had no compression, which is another story.........sigh!! gonna try them Namura pistons and rings............20 over, maybe a new carb kit too

Hi Pete and Senator!! Pete, I ordered the carb kit today, should be here the same time as the new piston. Senator, welcome to you also!! Taking out gas tank today so when the piston comes I can get my friend to do the cylinder wall honing so I can get the beast running again...i'm getting quadsick!! :aargh:

Pete loves stalkers.

yikes!!!!ok, I have a confession to make......this really should be posted in the Polaris forum,,,,BUT, I have been sharing all of this with you all so far......I did a "STUPID" and ordered the wrong size piston for the quad...i know, i know, i did not take the old one out before,,just AS* umed the next bore size, 20 over,,,,,well, the darn thing was sportin a 1.5mm over!!! SO, i ordered the 2mm over and am keeping the other one for the new cylinder, whenever that happens, plus i ordered a kit with the first one and needed the piston bearing and gasket set anyway,,,,lesson learned...hanginon, sorry bout the video I posted yesterday,,,not sure what happened so i took it down,,,was really cool quad in i think Canada or somewhere like that the guy had 26" wheels on it ans was pulling a jetski (one of my other loves, but not as much as TOP GUN!) wearing an old man face mask, going right through town like it was a daily occurrence, then he rode the crap outta the jetski, which was cool...it's on youtube: quadracer 26" (type in) and look on the sidebar for it, you cant miss it! I hope this thread does not seek the attention of Sgt Slaughter,,,,he scares me,,,LOL

Hey guys! I am new here to the forum and need some help getting my Polaris 325 Magnum 2001 Running.....So I got it for free and it has never run quite right...I put a aftermarket carb on it last year and it was running fine but it only went like 20 maybe 25mph max......But then the needle and seat sealed leaked within a yeah and it flooded it REALLY bad so I changed the oil because it was full of gas. So then I put a genuine Polaris carb on it and I have it set to all the factory specs, but it was still not running right....So I replaced the ignition coil and the spark plug and that solved one of the problems I had (It would bog down and stop running when i would go up a hill) But it still didn't have that much "Punch" to it like my Kawasaki Prairie 300 ans Suzuki Kingkuad 300.....So I replaced the CDI but it's still not running right! It's acting like it rich kinda....So it runs mostly okayish when I have the airfilter on but the top of the airbox off but as soon as I put the airbox lid on it like REALLY bogs down and wants to stall really bad. I have the carb at the factory specs and it has a pretty new fuel pump so I have no ideas whats going wrong! It still nly has a top speed of only about 30-35mph and it sounds like it's choking the whole time! Thank you for sticking to the end, and I hope you guys can help me!

I have acquired a free 92 Polaris 350L 4X4. Ive replaced carburetor from ebay, replaced spark plug, im trying to pull start but sounds like it doesnt want to fire. Spark is a bright orange spark (checked with spark plug tester), replaced plug, pre mixed gas from an external gravity feed tank. Compression test good. Anyone got any recommendations for me?

If anyone is having issues with the Mikuni VM24SS carb, I thought I would post what issues I had and how I resolved them.
Acquired a 93 Bayou 220 that had sat for over 4 years.
The carb was extremely corroded and pitted and full of leftover fuel.
Cleaned carb and bowl and was able to get the engine to start.
Within 30 seconds exhaust would heat up and start to glow red hot.
Removed carb and recleaned everything, including a second overnight soak.
Needless to say, after removing the carb for the 5th time and my frustration to the limit I
realized that my attention had been to the carb body and not to the bowl.
There is a small brass rod on the bottom of the carb that goes down into the float bowl but is seperated from the main section. I had cleaned that area very well....I had thought.
***The corrosion had sealed off the channel that runs from the main bowl section to the small tube section on the side of the float bowl. No amount of carb cleaner was going to get it to budge. So i took a small nail and started to scrape away the corrosion and was eventually able to dislodge enought of the corrosion that carb cleaner would flow through that channel. ***
I thoroughly cleaned each side of the channel in the float bowl and reinstalled the carb and now the issue of it running lean is gone.
On a second note the fuel mixture screw was a nightmare to remove as the threads had been corroded and wouldnt let the screw come out. I used a little cutting oil and worked the mixture screw in and out until I was able to push past the corroded threads and completely remove the needle. After a couple passes with a tap to clean the threads it is like new again.
Hope this helps if you are having a lean running machine.

Hello im new Here im having a no spark issue with my 1987 suzuki lt230e with a no spark condition

I am working on a basket case for a friend.  It is a 98 Big Bear (YFM350FWB).  It came with a parts machine which is a 96, which I am coming to find out is VERY different from his machine.

Anyway, first thing is first.  I checked compression, 150psi.  Valves are set correctly, and the engine is in time.  I cleaned the carb, and there was some junk in the passages.  It is a chinese carb, which I figured from the lack of markings or lettering altogether.

The bike runs.  It idles ok, but breaks up badly under acceleration.  Pulling a new spark plug shows it is running lean.  White strap, with no black whatsoever.  So I have the carb adjusted with the mixture screw out way too much (about 5 turns), and the diaphragm needle lifted to the top slot.  It is still not getting enough fuel (or too much air).  It backfires through the carb, and cannot get above idle without carrying on.  The carb boot is in good shape, so it isn't pulling any air there.  I did test this as well by spraying ether around the boot when running, looking for intake leaks.

Anything big I am missing here?  I am starting to believe that this chinese carb is the issue.  This quad came with the original carb, which I would like to rebuild and use, but the mixture screw is totally stuck, and stripped way down in its recess.

      Thanks for any assistance.
