The most complaints I heard about K&N is they do not seal well on some models. I think the key to all filters is to oil them correctly.

Well you have a older model but on the new ones I know it is not a big job just take your time and make sure to property torque down the axel nut with some red loctite. and replace the cotter pin with a new one. There are some maintenance manuals in the pinned section above. I would check them out before starting the job.
