  1. Hey guys. New guy here with my first Yamaha quad. Traded for an 01' Kodiak 400 that needs some tlc. It was running but idle is off, missing some hardware here and there, none of the lights work on instrument panel and front brakes didn't work were the main things that jumped out at me. I drug it home and have started tearing into it. Started with fresh oil change and flushed the dirty brown coolant and replaced with fresh coolant. The carburetor is missing the side cover for the throttle cable and I don't see where I can buy just that cover without buying a complete carb, so went ahead and ordered a new one (hasn't arrived yet). the Starter relay solenoid was crap and had to mess with it to get it to start half the time so replaced it. I have a few questions as I'm going through this quad that I'll list below. 1. It has a cut plug on wiring harness under the instrument panel. Can anyone tell me what this plug goes to? There currently is not a plug running to the 4wd indicator light on instrument cluster so I'm wondering if 2 of the wires are for that possibly?? 2. Also in the front, there is a air duct under the rack and black plastic panel that runs down to the engine case. Is there supposed to be some sort of cover or anything over it? I looked online at parts diagrams and couldn't even find this duct or the duct that runs up by taillight in any of the diagrams. 3. this fuel line on top left side of carburetor; is this what goes to the gas tank cap or is it just a vent line for carb? Follow up question, where does the line that comes off of the gas tank cap go to? I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I work through this thing. Thanks in advance for any replies.

  2. Actually have a long weekend off, usually we work the holidays but the plant shut down to install a new switchgear so lucky me! Took a ride on an old railroad grade that is now a recreational trail and legal to ride. There are a few places to stop and get something to eat. Michelle is driving her old quad, a 2010 366 which I kept as a backup machine. Her Alterra developed a hard starting problem at Snow Shoe, so it will be off to the dealer to adjust the valves. Was good to give this machine a nice long cruise run as it doesn't see many miles anymore.

  3. Yeah, that much of a difference would raise a red flag to me as well. I have never heard of this site but doing a quick search about it reveals it is only 2 months old and there have been several posts by others that they were scammed. When in doubt, I always search for site reviews. Mike

  4. I use my ATV for my ranch and for camping/hunt trips. I decided on the Polaris Sportsman xp1000. Do I really need all that power? No, but its nice for the time you really do (I mostly keep it in work or standard mode). So far its been a work horse and have no complaints for its performance as a work vehicle on my ranch or a trail rider. My only complaint is the rear axle being locked 100% of the time. On my Ranger xp1000 I can toss it in turf mode to not tear up my driveway and yard - to me not having turf mode is my one an only complaint.

  5. Plows are absolutely worth it if you have a driveway or road to maintain. My dad and I each have a plow on our machines at the cabin. I have a basic 5 foot blade, and he has the tapered county plow style blade where it throws snow to the right. I'll usually start by driving down the center and angling my blade all the way to the right, then he follows behind with the tapered blade and throws it over the shoulder. In regards to how much they can push you'd be surprised. I live in northern mn and multiple feet of snow isn't uncommon. You can start your initial pushing with your blade up and only work half the amount at a time. We've maintained our driveway and a good portion of cabin road through multiple heavy winters where banks can get 3 to 4 feet high. Of course everything has a breaking point and if it gets to it we will eventually get the snowblower out and work the edges blowing the banks into the woods, but it takes a while to get that point. The key is to start you winter season pushing it as far over and out of the way as possible and then hope for some warmups that'll melt it back a bit.

  8. We noticed the fan never ran on the black quad, did not see an overheat warning either. Last year I replaced the sensors because they were not working. When I wired in the LED lights on the front rack, I used the two pin trailer connectors to make it easy to unplug if I had to remove the front rack, the fan uses the same so I unplugged the lights and plugged the fan it and had her run it manually. This was weird. Got home and pulled the sensors and tested them by heating up some oil. The sensors tested good, and jumping the plug on the quad, the fan runs, so it was like WTF? Turned out the pins for the sensor were not fully seated in the connector. This machine also has a hard starting problem, not as bad as the Alterra, so it will go in the shop when I get the Alterra back. Mike

  9. Have you checked the timing ? You may be getting a kick back and not a back fire. Still odd that it’s breaking the key way but that’s where I would look first.
