Help me choose my first atv?

Buying my first hunting atv. Found these for same price...

2015 Polaris sportsman 570, all wheel drive, fuel injected, irs, automatic.

2013 Honda foreman 4x4 420, 4 wheel drive, fuel injected. No power steering.

Both are automatic. The dealer is pushing me to the Polaris, saying its a true all wheel drive which is close to power steering. He said the Honda he has does not have power steering. Also saying the solid rear axle on the Polaris better for rocky terrain.

Is the all wheel drive on the Polaris good enough or do I need the true 4 wheel drive for the worst terrain? I got some steep hills to climb.

Also wondering which will have better storage for hauling gear in and out?

Polaris 570 Sportsman is a great quad. Work or play it gets the job done. Storage is pretty good on the sportsman to.

Solid rear axle would be worse for rocky terrain, it will throw you around more. Between the two, I would go with the Honda, in most riding you do not need AWD or 4WD. With the honda, you can use it only when needed.

if you want it to be able to go over and through anything, take the polaris.  If you dont mind a finicky tranny and bad handling, go honda.

I've got both the Sportsman and Foreman.  A bit older models than what you are looking at but I love the ride of the Polaris over the Honda.  So smooth over the rough stuff.  I'm not sure but I think mine has some kind of 4WD on demand once the switch is engaged.  I read someplace that it detects slippage but it never fails to get me through some deep muck.  The Honda is a workhorse.  I've spent much less money on it in the same time and it gets (ab)used harder.  I've already replaced the starter, alternator, battery, wire harness and some other stuff on the Sportsman and just a battery and the ignition key on the Honda.  I tow a spray rig and small trailer with it and the Foreman just powers on and on.

I still believe a good King Quad is the way to go for bulletproof, but  no rack room for hunting. If your pulling a trailer it won't matter.

Find a good condition 500EFI Polaris, maintain it, and drive it. It will do all you need.

Over it's life you will replace some suspension parts, but they are cheap.

The used quads are usually either rode hard and put away wet, or ones with low miles and garage queens.

We have both quads and they have both been very dependable. I personally would not own a newer Polaris though. The 500 is a 2006.

Be patient, the right quad will make itself known.

polaris will be higher maintenance- hondas good for a farm for towing and hauling, but if you're out trail riding with your buddies, the honda eats the dust.  ride quality:  Polaris.  those machines are too smooth and bumps that would buck you on another atv, polaris just ripples through.  doesnt shimmy on the road either- mine rides just like a car at high road speeds..

polaris is also reliable, but is known for having electrical issues here and there (mainly starter and relay I believe)

I'm on my second stator in 3 years so might want to add that to the list :)

haha ok.  It could be too much voltage going into your stater that is slowly burning it out or just cheap aftermarket staters?  If you continue having issues, I would ask on the forum and see if its something else other than the stater thats causing your issue...  And again, every atv will have some sort of issue at some point..  Polaris just doesnt have internal (motor/tranny) issues near as much as other brands.

Yeah, I'm with you overall.  My comment was slightly tongue in cheek, if you will.  Have yet to tear into it again to determine the root cause but these were factory parts, dealer installed.

I'm not saying they aren't reliable. I just bought a new sportsman 570. But every Honda I've ever had has been bulletproof. That sportsman rides so smooth and has a good bit of power though.

If possible test ride them to get a feel for how they steer and handle. The solid axle will be bumpy vs the other but it's a quad so it's nothing to stew on too long.

      posted a while back - it was running at one point - I have all the plastic shroud off - it's down to frame and engine now
      -fuel pump: when line from petcock is attached, no fuel comes out other side to carb; the line to the carb is open (can blow through it); I thought when I cranked engine that the pump would spit out fuel on other side but it does not; I removed fuel pump and opened it up - diaphragm looks good - but internal areas had lotsa calcification build up - I cleaned this out and dried it good - the clear plastic pieces (?diaphragms) aren't broken - the spring w/ steel ball on end moves freely; am putting it back on tomorrow; but can anyone answer about the pump? isn't it supposed to pump fuel through it... to other side... to carb? puzzling
      -along with fuel pump: I replaced petcock 3 weeks ago (gas tank had rusty fuel in bottom - cleaned it out prior to new petcock); when I turn petcock arrow NOT to on or reserve, fuel comes out of line; when I turn it to on or reserve, fuel doesn't come out; puzzling
      -I don't know what's on back of fuel pump - it's a valve that has a hose coming out of it - looks like it goes to engine/carb - I haven't traced this out yet - what is it?
      -can squirt gas on air filter and engine will run for 2-3 seconds then stop - fuel in top of carb (under diaphragm) does same
      -it likely needs carb rebuild - will get to this - but something isn't allowing fuel to get from fuel pump to carb
      -I THINK it has a mikuni model x carb - diaphragm is ID 26mm  OD 68mm - hard to find inexpensive diaphragm, I guess because it's a model x
      -last thing - I replaced solenoid due to old one clicking; I HAVE to be charging the battery or it won't start/turn over - battery just goes dead; but if charging, it'll turn over nicely; i'm guessing it's a bad battery
      -any help appreciated - I've never owned an ATV before - inherited this beast from grandparent in-law

      Hi, I'm new to ATV/UTV's and am looking for any advice that would help to repair my 2018 Ranger 500.  I got it from an insurance auction and have never owned one before.
      It looks like it was sunk deep.  Found rocks and sand in the roof, milky oil in the air filter box, water in the fuse box, etc.
      So far, I've cleaned the air box out, vacuumed most of the rocks and sand, checked the engine, trans and diff casings for cracks/leaks.
      The battery would not charge while connected so I know there is some short somewhere...probably the wet fuse box.
       
      I plan on drying out the fuse box and all connectors with a hairdryer tomorrow, check the fuses, remove/dry out the ECM and disassemble/clean the air intake.  Then install the battery and see if i can get it to key on and see what kind of lights I get.
      Need to know what to expect with the engine/trans...

      My Honda Fourtrax won't start. The starter is kicking the engine over, but it won't start. It sat for about a year while I was living away, so I thought it might have been bad gas. I completely drained the fuel, flushed the fuel lines and filled it with fresh gas. However, still nothing. It started and ran fine the last time I used it. Any suggestions on how to diagnose this? It could be fuel or electrical at this point. Is there an easy way to rule one or the other out? Thanks

      I've never done this before but after reading a few thread I decided to check my valves for the first time and to my surprise it was much easier than I thought.
      My bike is a 2005 Sp 500 HO.
      I first pulled the seat and the right side panel off, and that's it! It wasn't too bad to get at.
      Next I pulled the spark plug out and removed both the head cover ( 8-8mm bolts)

      then the side cam cover (5-8mm bolts).

      Also remove the plug in the recoil cover (14mm bolt) to see the timming marks.

      Next I turned the engine over with the pull cord untill it was at TDC of the compression stroke.
      The best was to tell that your at TDC of the compression stroke is to rotate the engine until the
      timing marks are parallel to rocker cover gasket surface.
      The cam sprocket locating pin will be facing upward directly in line with the crankshaft to camshaft center line.
      Now fine adjust by looking into the timing hole in the recoil cover and line up the upside down "T" on
      the flywheel into the center of the hole.

      Now using a feeler gauge, slide the .006" (.15mm)blade between the top of the valve and the bottom of the adjuster and adjust accordingly

      [ATTACH]1025[/ATTACH]
      To adjust, Loosen the locknut (10mm) and check clearance with a feeler guage. Clearance should be .006" (.15mm) for both, intake and exhaust valves. Turn the adjuster with a stubby flat blade screwdriver untill the proper clearance is achieved then tighten the locknut (5.8-7.2 ft. lbs) while holding the adjuster in place with the screwdriver. Re-check the clearance with the feeler guage one last time and re-assemble the covers (72 in.lbs) and plugs.
      The only thing that i noticed was that I had to clean and silicone the side cam cover other than that I found the whole process rather simple.
      I'd give it a 4 out of 10 on the skill level scale.

      i have a 1993 timberwolf yamaha and the compression is good and lights work but for some reason the electricity is not going to the spark plug(s)! i got a friend to check it out and they said its no use but im not giving up! please help with this!

      I have a 1988 300 Honda FourTrax, All wheel drive.
      My brother and I were fixing up this quad. We put a brand new battery and fuses in and it was running fine until we put the quad into reverse. As soon as it was put into reverse all of the electrical cut out and power wasn't making it to the head unit anymore and both of the brand new fuses popped. We figured there might have been a short from the starter or solenoids, but they are all working properly. At this point we don't know where to start looking for where the short could be. I'm just wondering if anybody has had the same issue or knows of similar issues that could cause these electrical shorts?
