I have a 400 polaris'04 that when in low it pulls but wont in high

"Belt" message appeared on console screen. Does that mean a loose belt and either needs tightening or replaced? I kept going and turn off ignition. Could not start again. Not even a grunt, new battery. Partner jumped and I was able to do all my errands and drive home. (Total 2 hours). Battery still dead. What am I looking at as to possible diagnosis and corrections?

Hello ATVers, I need help aligning the belt on my Polaris Sportsman CVT. I bought this bike used and noticed a little smoke coming out of CVT exhaust under heavy throttle (smelt like burnt rubber). The previous owner claimed he installed a new belt, but when I opened up cvt cover I noticed belt was out of alignment causing the edge of one side of belt to fray. A small chunk of the belt was missing in one area. I removed one of the washers from behind the secondary pulley to move belt back to alignment with primary pulley. The washer acts like a shim and removing it moved the secondary pulley back about 1/8" which is what it needed. I don't like moving the pulley so close to the back of the plastic cvt case but my alternative (per the service manual) is to loosen the motor mounts and move the motor slightly to change position of the primary pulley and then re-tighten the mounts. Please correct me if this info is wrong. I haven't done this step, but I will do so if someone with more CVT experience could chime in. My son and I went for a ride and he typically drives in HIGH range which I'm told is bad for slow trail riding or driving thru mud. Primarily what we drive on are slow forest trails and very muddy sections. Apparently the combination of him being in HIGH range and the belt already frayed caused it to break. So I ordered an EPI sever duty cvt belt and a clutch kit since this bike's cvt has never been serviced. I plan on installing bigger tires for mud, so I ordered a kit designed for this type of riding. Any advice on how to adjust belt tension and alignment would greatly be appreciated. I don't wanna blow another belt. Standard OEM belt is $70 and this severe duty belt is $100!! They are not cheap.

First, I'm a mechanical novice, so please bear with my ignorance, I'm trying. 02 Eiger LTA400 - 4wd Auto 400 Picked it up on the cheap due to assumed broken drive belt (motors starts, goes nowhere). Also has to be pull-started, seems starter is shot (or wiring is). Pulled the cover off for the drive belt and definitely toast. Thing is he said he replaced not long ago, so suspicious of why it would break so quickly. He thought he had the wrong part, but looking at the part packaging, looks right to me (Dayco HP2027 - admittedly not highest quality belt, but still). I'm not an expert, but the primary and secondary do not seem to be lined up correctly? Any clues on this? Trying to upload pics to show... Broken Belt Alignment Help please! Brian

I have an '07 650 H1. Recently, when trying to take off easy, it acts like the belt is slipping. If I give it the gas, it grabs and takes off. It has 1300 miles on it and it has never had water or mud in the belt housing. I can think of no real reason why the belt should be worn enough to slip. Could there be some kind of lubrication problem not allowing the sheaves to move properly?

Goodyear introduces carbon fiber ATV drive belt ATV BELT HEALS SELF – Goodyear’s new Gatorback Sport ATV drive belt is the first CVT belt with carbon fiber reinforcement in its rubber compound. When handling an extreme load demand, the carbon fiber allows desired slippage on pulleys without top-width belt distortion. After the extreme demand subsides, the carbon material restores the integrity of belt edges in order to handle the normal load demand. http://www.goodyearatv.com/docs/press/gatorback_atv_rel.pdf
