  2. Is the Yamaha Rhino destined to go the way of the Honda ATC? Commentary by Jon Crowley, UTV Guide June 1, 2009 I was interviewed last week by a freelance reporter who is writing an article on the Yamaha Rhino and I got to thinking about the future of sport UTVs. Are Yamaha Rhinos, as well as other sport UTVs headed in the direction of the infamous Honda ATC three-wheeler from back in the 1980’s? If you remember way back when in 1982 (it really wasn’t that long ago), Honda introduced the ATC 200 Big Red. The ATC was a great machine, but as popularity exploded, so did the accident rate. Honda ATC Three Wheeler The increase in accident levels lead to an investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In 1986, CPSC statistics suggested that most accidents were due to improper rider behavior that ignored manufacturer warnings. No inherent flaw was found in the three-wheel design. Honda's owners manual and product warning labels stressed the importance of proper operation to its customers. Through a national industry safety campaign, there was a 33 percent decline in recorded CPSC injury statistics between 1984 and 1988. Nevertheless, in 1988, ATV manufacturers entered into a 10 year agreement with the CPSC. Under the agreement ATV manufacturers made a $100 million commitment to expand safety programs. Additionally, even though three-wheel ATC sales were dropping off, manufacturers agreed to stop distributing ATCs in the U.S. If history is bound to repeat itself, the sport UTV is headed in a similar direction as the ATC three-wheeler. The Yamaha Rhino is currently the biggest target, and Yamaha has worked out an agreement with the CPSC to “repair” existing Rhinos. Yamaha is facing an onslaught of lawsuits from users that for the most part have tipped their vehicles over and have been injured or killed. From what I have seen in reviewing many of the accidents, a lot can be blamed on users not following manufacturer guidelines for proper use. For example, here are the two most recent accidents that happened in May 2009: 13 Year Old Dies in Rhino Rollover Father Dies, 5 Children Injured in Rhino Rollover The accidents are tragic, that is for sure. But if you look past the typical inflammatory reporting that blame the machine, you will find that in both instances, many guidelines were completely ignored that would have either prevented the accident or surely lessened the severity. In the case of the 13 year old boy, he was not wearing a seat belt, he was under 16 years old, the Rhino was new (lack of experience), he was not wearing a helmet and there was no adult supervision. With the father that died in the roll over, the Rhino was carrying one driver and 5 children as passengers in a two person vehicle. No one had seat belts on, and the father was carrying his one year old son on his lap. If I am reading the tea-leaves correctly, I can see that improper use of sport UTVs will soon affect the types of vehicles that manufactures are allowed to build. Will the CPSC step in and limit how powerful side x side vehicles can be? Will helmets become mandatory equipment just like they are in California for ATVs? Will manufacturers be forced to add even more safety equipment? A riding lawn mower with doors, window nets and roll cages that create a safety bubble around occupants isn't too far fatched if you get where I am going here. Even though the vast majority of side x side vehicle owners use their vehicles without incident, all of these lawsuits, the bureaucrats at the CPSC and our efficient lawmakers are going to force manufacturers to limit how much fun we can have in our beloved UTVs. That is the sad truth. There are many more accidents involving bicycles per capita than there are in UTVs. If you apply the same logic to bicycles, manufacturers would have been forced to include a protective bubble around all bikes sold in the U.S. many years ago. But there are a few critical difference between bicycles and UTVs. First off, people have long ago accepted the fact that you may fall off your bicycle. And secondly, there isn't a specific manufacturer (aka cash cow) for a class action lawsuit so the lawfirms aren't interested. Just because you have an accident and then see an advertisement on the TV or on the internet from a lawfirm talking about accidents in a Rhino doesn't mean there is a problem with the vehicle. Here are a few guidelines to remember to help keep you safe in a side x side vehicle: Always wear your seat belt Always wear a helmet Don't drink and drive Keep arms and legs in the vehicle at all times Abrupt maneuvers or aggressive driving can cause rollovers even on flat, open areas Children under 16 should never drive a side x side vehicle Beyond following the guideline provided by vehicle manufacturers, use some common sense and take responsibility for your actions. Be sure to learn the limits of your vehicle and your driving ability.

  8. Hello Everybody, I just bought a 2003 Suzuki Eiger 4x4 semi-auto last weekend. It is my first ATV so I didn't spend a ridiculous amount of money on it. I need new rims and tires and I'm wondering if the rims/tires from a Yamaha Rhino will fit on my Eiger . From researching I found out that both models use tires that are 25x8x12 for the fronts and 25x10x12 in the rear. For the rims they both have a 4/110 lug pattern and seem to have a 12x7 wheel size and width. If anyone could help me out with this I'd really appreciate it...I don't want to buy these rims/tires and get them home to find out they won't fit . Thanks!

  16. 2008+ Yamaha Rhino 700 EFI The Copperhead® ECU is a plug and play replacement for the stock ECU in the Rhino 700 EFI (not a piggyback solution). It controls the timing and fuel, and improves throttle response. It provides a typical 6% power increase from idle to redline (WOT), and a part throttle power increase of up to 25% over stock. In addition, the top speed limiter has been increased to allow for about 16KPH/10MPH higher top speed (results dependant on tire size). The ECU also allows for the speedometer to be recalibrated for different tire sizes, and fuel can be adjusted for aftermarket camshafts and pipes (requires optional USB interface). FEATURES Multi-Spark Discharge (MSD) allows for maximum power and virtually eliminates misfires, while giving you easy starts and crisp throttle response. Preloaded performance map allows the machine to run cooler, produce more horsepower and more torque, while minimizing fuel consumption. Shipped with machine specific harness that plugs directly into factory wiring harness. Toggle switch on the unit allows user to switch between two preloaded setups. Default preloaded map keeps factory limiters (reverse / speed) and similar power when the toggle switch is in position #1. When the toggle switch is in position #2, all limiters are disabled, and the timing is optimized for maximum power on 87 octane fuel. Setups and maps can be changed and optimized for different fuel grades via the USB Memory Inteface (sold separately). Price: $400.00 Velocity Devices, Inc. 18. Good Article: Rhino Nation UTV's popularity came from a small, innovative off-road concept. History is full of stories about products originally introduced for a limited audience that unexpectedly caught fire with larger markets. A prime example is when Apple I was built in the 1970s. It was intended as a gaming platform for computer nerds. Only later did the inventors—Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak—realize the impact their invention had on millions of consumers. The story is repeated when Yamaha introduced the Rhino, a side-by-side whose instant popularity seems to have surpassed even the wildest expectations of its creators. Until the Rhino came along, UTVs emphasized utility and were intended primarily for work rather than play. Yamaha drew on its many years of off-road motorcycle and ATV expertise, infusing the new Rhino with healthy doses of sport and recreation capability and serious off-road prowess. The combination was magic and a new class of fun-to-drive, sporty compact utility vehicles was born. The Rhino was an immediate hit and a hot commodity at Yamaha dealers, which shouldn't come as a surprise since it is the brainchild of the creative team at the Yamaha Motor Manufacturing facility in Newman, Georgia. "Every Rhino built comes out of our Georgia manufacturing plant," says Van Holmes, public relations manager for Yamaha ATV and side-by-sides. "The Rhino was conceived, created, tested and is still built in Newnan. Our facilities in Georgia are absolutely critical to the Rhino's success and development, because it's based on how we use the vehicles here in the United States. It's not only an asset for the North American market, but for Yamaha worldwide." The original Rhino shared primary mechanical components with the muscular Grizzly 660 4x4 ATV, which is also manufactured at the plant in Newman. Powered by the Grizzly's liquid-cooled 660cc SOHC five-valve four-stroke engine featuring a V-belt "Ultramatic" transmission with high range, low range, and reverse, the 660 Rhino offered plenty of punch for off-road fun and adventures. Ultramatic maintains a constant belt tension, which delivers quick throttle response, reduces wear, and allows downhill compression braking. The fully-independent front and rear suspension with upper and lower A-arms is Grizzly inspired as well. Yamaha followed the highly successful Rhino 660 with a lower price-point and more fuel efficient 450 model in 2007 and a more powerful fuel-injected 700 FI in 2008. Read more....
  19. Oil Change - Yamaha Rhino Oil change steps for the Yamaha RhinoBefore you start, you'll want to make sure you even need to change the oil. Do you have a brand-new Rhino? If so, you should change your oil after the first 20 hours/1 month/200 miles, whichever comes first. This is important in the initial break-in of your motor. After that, the manual says you should drain the oil every 150 hours/6 months/1500 miles. However, most industry professionals will tell you this is way too long and suggest changing the oil every 75 hours/3 months/750 miles and swapping out the filter each time. The problem is that the manufacturer is assuming you're using your Rhino for nice quiet drives on a graded dirt road...yeah right, most of us are barreling through mud holes or screaming up dunes for hours on end. Plus, your Rhino basically has the same motor as a normal ATV but is doing twice the work, hauling around an additional 400 pounds and a passenger. That extra stress needs to be taken into account when deciding how often to change your oil. This also applies to any performance modifications you've made. If you're putting extra horsepower through the engine's internals, you'll want to change the oil more often to help prevent premature failure. 22. We got it yesterday, snapped it in place of the stock CDI, and took 'er for a test drive. Got it past the max speed it used to get up to (42 mph) in no time at all, can't wait to see how fast she'll really go now! She should do great in the dunes this weekend!!!!!
  23. Are you aware the Yamaha Rhino 660 and 450 are top heavy and this leads to numerous injuries and deaths. Scores have reported these accidents in the four years this model has been on the market. The ATV experiences rollover when going around sharp turns, even at slower speeds. Yamaha sent a letter to Rhino owners last year acknowledging the dangers but seemed to indicate the accidents were the fault of the driver. Then Yamaha conceded the defects and decided to overhaul the design aspects of the Rhino. You can read more about it by visiting Yamaha Lawsuit Rhino ATV Lawyer Rollover Attorney
