2000 Polaris Sportsman 500 issues
JacobSlabach replied to Christian Brindle's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
I would do the same as what @Frank Angerano said with the air screw. I have an 04 sportsman 500 that I had to replace the carb on so I will be working through the same issues of adjustments. as for not getting moving by 1/4 throttle, sounds like a worn out belt to me. mine does the same thing, but I dont worry with it cause it still runs good- just doesn't get moving as soon on the throttle. I also have a kawasaki bayou that has a Chinese carb on it and it would start cold or run right ever till I turned the air screw out about 2-3 turns past what the manual called for... runs flawless now, easy to start in any weather condition... It would also bog out if I had it pegged at high speeds- not now- the thing is a speed demon now.😎🤘 -
How 4-cycle ATV Engines Work Discussion

ok. I understand what your saying. Any input from other forum members would be great too! Do you know of any chain-cam lawn mowers? maybe 0-turns? (just wondering haha) -

How 4-cycle ATV Engines Work Discussion
JacobSlabach replied to JacobSlabach's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
ok, so what I'm hearing you say is a OHC (overhead cam) engine has the chain driven cam above the valves, and the OHV (overhead valve) engines have the cam in the crankcase and pushrods operating the rocker arms...? So why would atvs have mostly OHC engines and general purposes engines (lawn mower etc.) be OHV? -
How 4-cycle ATV Engines Work Discussion
JacobSlabach replied to JacobSlabach's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
how do I do that? lol didnt know that I could edit a thread after starting it... -
in this thread, I want to discuss how 4-cycle atv engines work- what the different types are... how they are set up and which you prefer. To start off, are the cams on ALL atv 4-strokes powered by a cam chain? I know that on say a lawn mower or logsplitter engine, the cam is turned by the tappet, pushrods, and valve rockers. Which is better and why? Chain-driven cams or pushrod-driven cams? Are the pushrods just an old version and everything is transforming to chains or the other way around...or not at all? Just looking for some explanation, history, and downsides/upsides...

....haha a lot with a honda or 2x4 polaris or yamaha.... the bayou just has a frame too long and too heavy for the power it puts down..no torque.. -

JacobSlabach replied to Nick Martini's topic in General ATV Discussion
why would you want them to be lower? Maybe its just me haha but I prefer lower handlebars for control as I love high speeds over all types of terrain😴 -

JacobSlabach replied to Nick Martini's topic in General ATV Discussion
kodiaks have lower handlebars so the rider sits forward- not as comfortable, but gives the rider more control with messy terrain. they also have a lower seat for easy mounting and jumping off quick- with the same amount of ground clearance. in other words, the kodiak is a compact smaller-bodied sport version of the griz -

the 850 and 1000 might be a little pricey- but they will definitely give you A LOT of bang kodiaks are more sporty than grizzlys which are geared toward utility, the guts are the same (engine and tranny) -

The only thing i know about compression is that you can shorten engine life by increasing the compression... I dont think ehgines that come from the factory with higher compression are less reliable at all. I personally like the 850 and 1000cc sportsmans. -

polaris fan. the sportsman 570 puts out almost the same amount of horse as the grizzly 700-and delivers it to the rear end. Jumping- sportsman is for you. got a friend that jumps his around 4 feet in the air and it didnt blink. sportsmans are tough and strong and easy to lift for snow or mud if you ever get into that.. got good shocks. btw when I said the 570 put out more horse than the griz 700, just keep in mind that was the 700. some quads are made more cheaply today....some even better.. For all I know the 660 (a little older model) is twice as powerful as the 700. cc just tells you the size of the engine. hp tells you the power. If you dont have a good belt and trans that delivers the hp to the rear end, you can have a 1000cc get smashed by a 300cc. I say its more about the trans on most bike (to a certain extent) that the cc. -
2004 Polaris Sportsman 500 Reversed Terminals On Battery
JacobSlabach replied to JacobSlabach's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
I have a hunch that water is in the pod (the lens is cracked) and that is causing shorts randomly. I got the wiring harness back together and turned the key and different parts of the display came on here and others there... I'm thinking if I can somehow put a hole in the lower end of the pod, the water will drain and maybe that will help. I did pull the old axle off the sportsman. How? I used a mall and some cable from a zip line brace: Looped the cable in the knuckle of the axle and the other end just above the mall head. Braced the atv with a 2x4 so it wouldnt come off the jack stands and gave a couple gentle swings... out it came. I did squirt some WD-40 in there first. Just got the new axle shipped in in today yesterday while I was out of town. -

I dont think so. I think it was just messed up somehow when I rebuilt it and I put way too much clearance in the rockers... I'm surprised they arnt damaged.. I rode the bike while it was ticking for a while.. -
sweet! definitely post a pic!

the way Ive always done it: nobody cares about the 'safe' limit...thats just to cover there butts from being sued when an idiot tries to put a semi on it and gets killed. I always judged the limit by when the jack broke. For example, My shed/shop was settling in one corner about 3 years ago. Took my dads 2 ton jack and lift my (at that time) 8x10 shop up while loaded with tools. Jack leaks a little now but is still trucking..🤘 oh and btw the dad lives by this same standard. I wasnt the one that made the jack leak- He used it to jack up our kitchen sealing about 4 inches because of termite damage... two story house...upstairs lifted by a 2 ton jack and it lives to tell the tale...😎
