  1. Hi everyone, I received a 98 Yamaha Timberwolf from my brother for free, and I'm working on getting it going. I am having the following problem: The engine is backfiring through the carb. I have done the following to try and get the four wheeler running: Rebuilt the carb and set the air screw to 1-1/4 turn out and the circlip at middle position 3 Replaced the coil, because the cable was loose at the coil end Repaired the main ground, coming from the battery Replaced the ignition switch, because my brother couldn't find the key. New switch tested good Tested the kill switch and it tested good New coil tested goodfor both primary and secondary coils Pickup coil resistance is at 195, which is correct My source coil, is where I believe the issue is. The resistance is 310ohms, and it should be between 428-523ohms When I opened the stator housing, there was significant oil, which I have read is normal. Does it sound like I'm on the right track replacing the source coil? Could this be causing my backfiring issue? It looks like the source coil is part of the stator assembly, is this correct? 4BD-85510-20-00 STATOR ASSY
  2. I have a kawasaki klf 300b 1987 and when i got it originally from a friend it was sitting for like 10 years and of course it didn't run so i went through the steps of fixing it. Had good compression and clean carb but i wasnt getting any spark. I went through the steps of fixing that and turns out the cdi box was bad, so i replaced that and got spark so i started her up and she was a little scared at first but slowly broke in and idled perfectly fine. But everytime i gave it any gas it would just bog out completely so i had it idling and sprayed starter fluid into the intake to see if it would rev up, but it did the opposite and died out. I think it might be something to do with the spark since after that i took it out and it was wet. Im guessing its not sparking at higher rpms but i have no idea how to fix that since ive never had that issue before, keep in mind ive cleaned the carb maybe 5 different times with a supersonic cleaner and put needles through all the wholes. Someone please help me out with this old *** atv
  3. I am a new atv owner...I bought a used atv this summer (pretty sure it is a wolverine but reg card from last owner didnt actually say that so idk for sure). It ran great for most the summer and early fall but one day I tried starting it and it turned over a while without starting and then suddenly it quit turning over at all. No click or anything. I charged battery and light turns on showing neutral and heatlight can go on. A few other things that may be pertinent: The pull start is missing, I have a fluke multimeter but not many other advanced tools (or relevant experience), there is an extra aftermarket led light attached to front but it doesnt work either... never looked into why since I didnt need it. I looked for a fuse box and didnt find one. Please recommend some easier things to try first as I really want to avoid taking it in if I can (having one income and 4 kids can keep out extra cash, plus I want to learn). Pictures would be awesome if possible. Thanks!
  4. Hi, I'm new to this forum and I hope you can help me out. My '99 Polaris 250 Trail boss does this: shifting in to forward the gears grind a bit. Once in gear the rig wants to immediately move forward. If I don't get to the throttle fast enough, she stalls. If I do, off we go. It happens everytime I shift into gear.Could this be caused by dirt inside the clutch sheaves causing the belt to engage early (before any throttle input)? Or what??? Thanks in advance.
  5. i have a 89 lt-4wd, and it doesn't want to easily downshift into neutral I believe it could be a bent shift fork. Is my thinking correct, and has any done work on the transmission of these quads or have any tips? thanks in advance.
  6. I have a 05 king quad 700, cranks and runs fine but when put it in reverse it spits and sputters and barley moves. Also taking off in high or low its sluggish for a second then takes off. It also has over sized super swampers on them. Never owned a automatic so I don't know anything bout clutches in the motor. Great full for any help!!
  7. I have a 2001 sportsman 400 that overheats. I do not hear fan kick on, however fan does work if i put 12 volts to it. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem may be>? I know there is a water pump and it looks like 2 sensors that may be wired to fan motor to turn it on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, boogs
  8. Guys, I need some help with a starting issue on an 01 Kodiak. I picked up the machine from the owner to fix the stuck choke, change oil, and work on battery connections that would not stay tight. I performed this work and used it for about a week with no issues at all. The day that I was going to return it to the owner, it would not start. I quickly diagnosed that it had no spark at the plug. I checked a few basic things and could not find anything obvious. So the owner wanted me to take it to the local Yamaha dealer to have it diagnosed and fixed. The dealer diagnosed a bad pulser and replaced that part. It still had no spark, so they said it needed a CDI box. They installed a brand new CDI box and then the spark was back. But for some reason it still will not start. The dealer was terrible to work with so the owner and I agreed to pick it up from them. So here is the current condition: it will turn over fine with the starter, but it wants to kick back sometimes. But it will only kick back when the choke is on. I know it’s getting fuel because the plug is soaked and fouled quickly. Once or twice it sort of started to fire, but not much. I am thinking somehow the timing is off. I pulled the cover off and the key is NOT sheared. The piston is at TDC when the T mark lines up with the small hole in the cover. I plan on cranking the engine over and using the timing light to see if the T lines up with the observation hole. What else can I check?? Thanks in advance for any ideas that can help me solve this problem.
  9. I have an '06 king quad 700 that has recently started giving me an issue with starting. The red FI light, which i am assuming is the fuel injection light, is staying on sometimes causing the atv not to start. if the light goes off as it is suppose to i notice that the fuel pump comes on and the atv starts and runs fine. it is doing this when the atv is cold and hasnt been ran that day! could this be the relay causing this issue, i would think if the relay went bad it would never work. i have checked all connection and all appear to be really clean and free of debris. i dont ride it that often and never to the point where it gets any water or mud under the seat where all the connections are at. any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated, have a trip planned to west virginia in a couple of weeks and dont want to miss it. thanks in advance!
  10. ok i have a 2007 arcticcat 700 efi 4x4 it has died on me and wdoesnt want to run i have put a new plug in cleaned coil wire and hammer have also remoced throttle body cleaned it omed out tps checked ics for proper movment have cleaned and ran injector it seems to work fine have cecked fule pump and relay runs like new has 100 percent gas with heat in it for water removal and only way i can get it to run is to turn the tps all the way clock wise i can get it to start that way but only way it will stay runing is i i atand there and give is short burst of starting fluid to the throttle body i have also checked the boot between the throttle body and intake i have also hit every connection with die electrical grease , i know its a fuel issue but from where and whats causing it please help
  11. i have a 2000 suzuki lt 80. whenever i try to start it it cranks like once and then stops , i do this like five times in a row then the circuit breaker pops, then i reset it and try it agin but it still doesnt start. the battery is fully charged. any ideas?
  12. I just bored out my 87 Bayou 300 .020 over and installed a new oversized piston and had the valves vacuum checked. With everything back together and after setting timing and cleaning carb I am having a problem with it trying to start. When the engine turns over it will pop as if it is trying to fire off but will not run. I have about 125lb compression I have fire and I sprayed fuel in carb with these it should at least try to run. The only thing I can think of is a timing issue. I have lined the cam sprocket up with klf300 and set accordingly to the to the T mark on the alternator rotor. I have taken it off and double checked it twice I have even set it one camchain link forward and then aft of the correct Top setting at the camsprocket. I have set the valves to spec. When I turn the engine over by hand the valves open and close like they should at the right interval and the piston is at top dead center when aligned with the T mark and cam sprocket are in there right positions. Can I use a timing light when I try to start the engine and check for correct timing? I read something about a timing advance not sure how that works. Is there a sure way to check exactly when the engine fires?
