There is a fuel screw on the bottom of the carb in front of the float bowl. This screw controls the idle fuel mixture. I would start by adjusting that. Has the quad been sitting for a long period of time? If so, your problem may be that the carb is gummed up, a good COMPLETE carb cleaning will help in that case.

DOES POLARIS CARE?????????Don't think so...
DirtDemon replied to MUDDIE49's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
I guess when I said don't be rude, I should have said, don't be too rude. I have had many experiences with service and warranty issues and I have found that being firm and authoritive with these people is the only way to get them to pay any attention to you. I have found that making a scene in front of other potential customers is a good way to get people moving. Make sure that the other customers standing around you are able to hear you complain that the service is crap and that you aren't being taken care of. By being aggressive and abrasive you can get these people on their heels scrambling for an answer or a way to you off their back. Just don't let up untill you get what you want. Just don't make any crazy threats or get yourself thrown in jail. -
Welcome, that is a nice ride you got there. I am curious where you got an '05 250R since the last year they were produced was 1989. Is it a fresh build using after an aftermarkets frame and other newer parts? Or maybe a 450R or 400EX with a 250R motor and plastics? Can you post some better pics of that thing?

That's right, poor maintainence is a good way to destroy a machine way before its time.

I think that Raptors are the most uncomfortable quads I have ever ridden, they are just too tall. The YFZ was really awkward at first, but not as bad as the Raptor. Although, even though I don't prefer the way either of those machines feel, I can get adjusted enough to ride one all day and have fun doing it. I can imagine how that would be more difficult for a taller person though.

Thanks, it just so happens that I work with PE gas pipe every day at work, so I am familiar with its properties. -

A wheel cylinder is what actuates the brakes in a hydraulic drum system, you don't have one in a mechanical drum. -

Be persistant, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you can get a phone number for Polaris, call them repeatedly, if you don't get anyone leave a ton of messages. Don't be too rude, but don't take any crap either. -
Chain lube is your friend.

If I could, I would buy it right now. I still owe too much on my LTR to get what I owe out of it since I have wrecked it a couple times and you can buy a new one for dirt cheap right now. They were asking 11k for it when they first got it cause they loaded it with a bunch of aftermarket goodies, so 7k is quite a deal, I just need to figure out how to pull it off.

Just picked me up another Honda. It's an '04 TRX 450R. It leaks oil like a sieve and needs some new front tires, but I got it for next to nothing.
-
I am only 5'9" so it fits me just fine, I think that Hondas are the best for taller people because the bars sit higher so you aren't so hunched over. My LTR was a little strange before I replaced the steering stem with a taller one, but the KTM felt perfect to me.
-
I second that, the TRX and YFZ are very different ergonomically. The Honda has you sitting more upright with the bars up higher, while the YFZ has you leaning over the bars. One will most likely feel much more natural for you. They are both good all around machines, so I would go with which one feels most comfortable to you.
-
I know, and I can't wait. There is one at the dealer where I bought my LTR, it has about $2,000 worth of accessories and has been sitting there since they first came out. The price is down to $7100, hopefully it is still there for a while cause I wan't it bad, but I can't afford it right now. I stop in from time to time just to sit there and stare at it. That is how I ended up with my LTR, I had no intention of buying anything I was just wishing I could and then I left with it.

2002 Suzuki Eiger Rear Brake Drum Help!!!
DirtDemon replied to footbal9584's topic in Suzuki ATV Forum
The grease should be used any moving parts and places where there is metal on metal contact between parts, just make sure it doesn't get on the contact surface of the drum or on the friction pad of the shoe. I am sure you can use the same stuff you would use on your car, just make sure it is recommended for use on brakes. When adjusting the the brakes, you want to make sure that the cables are tight enough for the brakes to engage fully before the lever bottoms out, but not so tight that the brakes are rubbing constantly. I would guess that you want about 1/2" to 3/4" of free play in the brake pedal or lever before the shoe contacts the drum. Once again, I recommend buying a manual, it will have specific specs and clearances for your machine. -
The YFZ is a great machine, and that is a great price. I am sure you will find a good deal when you get home.

That's cool, sharing a birthday with your hubby. You guys are very smiley people, you must be pretty happy together. My friend's wife is 6'1" and he is only 5'10", when she wears heels she towers over him and he hates it.

Yeah, my next quad will most likely be the 525XC, I was pretty sure before but after I actually rode a KTM I was 100% sold.

Most ATV fenders are made out of polyethylene or PE. It is an oily plastic and fuses easily with heat, so they should weld well. There are usually three different types of PE, high, medium, and low density. I would think that atv fenders are probably low density, but they might be medium. Either way, you can weld them together, we fuse high density to medium density all the time at work, you just have to put the heat on the hd side for a bit longer than the md side. Plastic welding with a hot air machine is done like gas or TIG welding where you have your heat source in one hand and your filler material in the other. The idea is to heat the surface of the work area to a molten state without pushing a hole all the way through the material, then you add the filler material to the heated puddle and melt, or "wash" it in with the heat source. Like any type of welding, practice makes perfect. I would try welding on a similar material to practice before you take it to your quad. -
I met a couple of guys at Capitol Forest yesterday and one of them was riding a 505sx and he was nice enough to let me ride it. By far the fastest an best handling stock quad I have ever ridden, I was very impressed. He also had a 4mil Banshee that he let me mess around on, that thing was just plain wicked.
-
The polaris has a KTM motor which is a huge plus in my book. IMO the KTM's are the best bikes out there, they are definately the fastest. I just had the opportunity to ride a 505sx yesterday, and it was awesome, tons of power and it handled better than anything I have ever ridden. So I am sure you won't be dissapointed with the polaris, at least not when it comes to the motor.

outlaw 525 vs dvx400

Definately, they are great machines and have several strengths over solid axle machines, but like you said, they need to be ridden differently in certain situations. -
2002 Suzuki Eiger Rear Brake Drum Help!!!
DirtDemon replied to footbal9584's topic in Suzuki ATV Forum
You should buy a manual, and or question your dealer or whoever you buy the parts from. Most brake systems use a high temp synthetic or silicone grease to reduce squeaking and vibration. The grease must be high temp rated and only small amounts are used so that the grease stays where it needs to be and doesn't get hot and run off. The smell you noticed was burning brakes, that means something was dragging constantly. That could be caused by a sticky brake actuator, foreign debris lodged between the shoes and drum, or it could just be that you adjusted the brakes too tight. Heat will cause your brakes to fade and wear extremely fast. While you have things apart, make sure to properly clean and lubricate all moving parts. I assume these are mechanical drums since you mentioned that they are cable operated.
