Transmission overheat?
davefrombc replied to bradleyheathhays's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
Glad your transmission is ok. It's a lot cheaper changing out a differential from a wrecker. UI know the feeling. Years ago I thought my transmission or transfer case had gone on my 4x4 and it turned out to be the differential that time too. Mine started with a bang and crunch and then got progressively worse until I got it to the shop.. by the time I got it there there wasn't much left of the differential gears -
Power loss in carburetted engines is about 3% for each 1000 ft. of altitude. You would need to lean our you engine a little for those altitudes to keep it from running too rich.

I added a pdf of the wiring of the various connectors used in vehicle socket and trailer plug wiring to the "Other ATV files" section in downloads.

Transmission overheat?
davefrombc replied to bradleyheathhays's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
Transmission is most likely toast . If the linkage was fine the tranny will need to be opened up, and dark burnt smelling fluid is a huge indicator of a dead transmission. Changing fluid will do no good and just be a waste of money. -
Transmission overheat?

The input shaft is what transfers the power from the engine through the torque converter to the transmission gears. I doubt it broke. I have no idea what MLPS is supposed to be. There's a number of things could have gone wrong, from the linkage from the shifter to the trans becoming disconnected to the failure of the oil pressure pump in the transmission or something in the valve body and solenoids that select the gears . -
Transmission overheat?

I doubt the lack of coolant affected the transmission.. Most transmissions can be run a long time with the coolant lines blocked off unless they're being run under very heavy load. The lack of coolant would have seized the motor long before it hurt the tranny. -

Members like @Rich don't realize how close Canada and the US are tied with citizens of both countries having relatives on both sides of the border and the integration of many of our businesses. I have no vote in your elections , but I do have my opinions which are just as relevant as yours. If the US only dealt with her own with no trade with the rest of the world maybe world opinion of what goes on there would not matter , but with the US being a major trading partner with so many, their opinions matter and directly affect your trade with them. Ask your farmers and others hurting because of tRumps asinine tariff war if other countries and peoples opinions matter in American affairs. -

Justrandy , the UK can easily replace Boris if he riles the masses enough. They don't even need to go to the polls to do it. I believe there are some differences in their Parliament so I can't comment on exactly how they can do it , whether it is like ours where his party merely has to hold a convention and choose a new leader or if it has to be a choice by all members of Parliament. Our income tax rates are on a sliding scale. Copied this direct from the government site : These taxes are after all our personal deductions have come off our gross income , rate is on net. Federal tax rates for 2019 15% on the first $47,630 of taxable income, plus 20.5% on the next $47,629 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over 47,630 up to $95,259), plus 26% on the next $52,408 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $95,259 up to $147,667), plus 29% on the next $62,704 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over 147,667 up to $210,371), plus 33% of taxable income over $210,371 Unfortunately I don't qualify for getting hit with any of the four top tax rates. Federal business taxes are nowhere near the rates you quote either . If you want to make your head spin here is the government noise on corporate tax rates: https://www.taxtips.ca/smallbusiness/corporatetax/corporate-tax-rates-2019.htm I suggest a good stiff beverage of your choice as you try to make sense of it. Federal sales tax is 5% on nearly all goods and services. Provincial sales taxes vary by province . Here in BC it is 7 %. -

I hope not .. It would cost a fortune for the wall we would make you erect and pay for to keep him in, and to support the armed guards we would need to make sure he didn't climb over or tunnel under. We have our own much milder version of tRump here seeking election. We don't need the full blown one here . Maybe Boris would welcome in the UK. -

As long as our discussions bring others to thinking and searching for facts , real facts, and forming their own opinions we have accomplished something. We may not agree on everything. What a boring world that would make , but we can civilly disagree and reach a consensus that benefits us all. If only we were all as smart as the Great Orange one claims to be -

Trump, or as I normally spell it tRump to refrain from being accused of profanity, is the perfect example of a cult leader. His followers blindly follow him and ignore every negative fact of his suitability for the position. Clinton was the target of character assassination for years before she ran for the presidency. The lies and half truths against her were repeated often enough over a long enough period even skeptics developed a dislike for her. It's unfortunate because she would have been hands down a far superior President than the present disaster to the US. The only thing I had against Hillary is that she was more hawkish than I like to see, but whether you agree or not , I saw her administration skills and intelligence first rate . Rump has a BS degree in economics.. The BS is very fitting and doesn't mean Bachelor of Science. I wonder how much Daddy paid for little Donald's degree. The GOP can be very glad the rest of the world can't vote in American elections .. They would be totally wiped out for their support of tRump. Only in America could he stay in power without a shooting uprising .. In the Parliamentary democratic countries he would have been removed from power long ago by his own party members simply by voting in a new leader .. You in the US have far less ability to easily remove him.. There is no "redo" provisions for your vote for President when corruption and interference swaying the election has been so strongly shown, even if technically not proven in court yet . Getting rid of the anachronistic Electoral college would go a long way to bringing the US voting system of of the 1700s into modern reality of communications .. It served its purpose back then when It sometimes took months to tabulate votes and relay results to decide the Presidency and members of Congress, but now it is really useless and can result in the wrong person being elected simply because he ( or she) took the majority in key states. The US surviving tRump so long without violence and collapse is a tribute to the innate strength of the American economy and the majority of her people. I wouldn't test it for another 4 years though.. You've been lucky so far . -

I bought my '91 300 Fourtrax FW about 10 years ago and the only repairs I've had to do to it is new front brake shoes and a new rear axle and hubs .The axle was pretty much toast when I bought it but ran it for about 5 years before the splines on the left side finally completely gave out so in effect if I had traction ok on the front I had 3 wheel drive and if not I had one wheel drive LOL. Yup turned 76 6 days ago. I still think I'm 30 until I try to do what I did at 30. Takes me a lot longer and I need a lot more help to do it now, and I hurt a lot more afterward I rode dirt bike and drove standard tranny cars and trucks for years so definitely familiar with downshifting .. Both my Blazer ZR2 and Sierra 2500 HD are automatics now so the quad is the only manual shift. Didn't ride quads until I bought the Honda so I definitely was a late starter on them . -

I am also a Honda man because when you're deep in the woods you want the machine that got you there to get you back. At 76 I don't need the fastest or the most powerful and pretty looking .. I want a machine that does everything I want it to do and doesn't need a warehouse full of spare parts to keep doing it, and I might add one that doesn't eat up my pension funds to keep going . -

Since Kawasaki doesn't give the size and pitch of the bolts, I would suggest estimating the diameter of them and then go to a metric bolt supplier and buy one bolt of each that appears the same size. Get one of each pitch if there is a fine and coarse pitch offering in that size. Here is a conversion chart of common inch bolts and their standard metric equivalent. I'll add it to the downloads section also.

an't fight you on that .. My own quad is a 1991 Fourtrax 300FW. Does everything I want . Bought used 6 years ago.. Only repair I've needed to do on it is replace the rear axle due to worn out splines at the hubs. and replace front brake shoes. Still runs strong and not burning oil. Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki are also all good machines ; as well as the Kymco machines.. I know some swear by Polaris but around here most swear at the older ones ..They're nicknamed "Pullhairis" by the ones I know that have had one in the past . I don't know how the newer ones are because nobody I know has one .. -

The sprag is a clutch.. It is a special assembly that locks up in one direction and free wheels in the other. I don't know about your machine but on many the sprag can be put in wrong side out so the starter can't lock it up to turn the motor over. They are built with rollers that are made to lay flat when spun on way and rotate to lock to the outer part when spun the other.. Search on "sprag clutch" to see what I mean.- 10 replies

cranks but won't start
davefrombc replied to bradleyheathhays's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
I don't see anywhere we mentioned anything about a carb.. I suggested checking fuel pressure to the injectors. If your fuel pump isn't delivering adequate pressure either due to a failing pump or plugged filter the vehicle will be hard starting and running poor .. As Frank said , moisture in the coil or other components of the ignition system could cause erratic spark. If it is getting fuel and spark , then the problem is in timing or other mechanical problems. One thing that is often overlooked is the possibility of a plugged catalytic converter causing running problems. -
