As long as you have consistent spark verified while it cranks and fuel is going into the carburetor then it could juts be a cranking issue. It usually happens when you have low compression. I would take a compression reading for sh*** and goggles.

Does the engine turning over have enough speed or is it a slow crank ? I’ve seen starters that crank at a low rpm and that won’t start the bike.

It’s cheap and easy enough to replace them.

True story mike! Seems like a long time but it’s only been 3 plus years or so. Come a long way since this bike. I have vendors, search documents that make life easier for my electrical work and parts guys all over now. Even some cool paint, vinyl graphics and hydro dipping equipment to play with.

Good stuff! Have you tried shifting without coming off the throttle ? I used to ride back by Kennedy Airport back in the day, they had a cool strip of asphalt. We used to test out speed on that strip and clock the bikes. That is one quick machine from 0-60 in 7+ seconds.

Ok well so I guess it’s a new pick up coil but I don’t think you can get them separately? If that’s the case then maybe order a whole new set up stator and all. I’ve been lucky with caltrec so far so maybe you got a defective one ? So if your sure that everything else tested ok including the cdi which you can only test by putting on another bike and it’s good then you have to go with your gut on this. -
Thank you @Ajmboy I appreciate that ! Just rebuilt the carb she fired right up! Going to wash it down and pressure wash the engine and check all fluids. Thanks again brother.

That does. It mean it’s not sending a signal. If it ohms within spec it’s most likely ok. have you tested your secondary ignition coils as well as the regulator ? -
Yes big thing ! Especially on state land, hikers are constantly out there and rightfully so. Problem is hunters hear the leaves crackling like a potato chip factory and they take aim in that direction. Scary stuff, even avid atv riders are out there riding and have no clue it’s hunting. So state land riders should be made aware.

That would be 430 and it sounds like it’s within spec. how do you know it’s not sending a signal to the cdi ? -
Not sure how many of you will remember this or give a crap about it but back in 2016 I picked up my first old atv to rebuild. Yamaha bear tracker 250. I picked it up in NJ while I was out looking for a quad for my little guy since he started this atv thing after seeing a few old pictures of me in my hay day riding. The person I was getting the 50cc quad had this one laying around and asked if I was interested in it. It was beat up and hadn’t ran in a few years. No spark the guy said and he left it to sit. I wound up taking both bikes. I wish I had pics but I deleted the original post on Quadcrazy and lost the old ones on my phone when I upgraded. This was the atv that caused me to stumble upon Quadcrazy since I needed a little help with the spark issue. So needless to say I fixed it, did some cosmetic work and she was good to go. I took it upstate and used the sh** out of it for just about everything under the sun. This atv made it through some deep snow, mud etc. I decided to leave it up there and use it as a back up since it’s been about 50 atv’s later and I have newer machines now. But unfortunately it sat for some time and it’s a little beat up so I brought it back home and going to clean it up. Amazing how one year sitting has done so much damage. This was the first atv that I owned in over 30 years! It’s the atv that brought me here to Quadcrazy where now I endlessly check the site to see what’s going on, who’s talking about what and who can we help with there problem or can help me with mine as well as the on slot of what I do today as a hobby with atv’s. It’s been a great pass time for me and my son with the projects we have gotten and get into. He’s learned how to ride so well it scares me a little watching him. He’s learned how to fix, maintain and upgrade atv’s. He’s insanely good with carburetors as well. It’s a good thing when a kid wants to play in the garage over his X Box!! The funny thing about this bike is that when we finished it we thought it was the best thing! We were missing a rack on the front and didn’t care since it looked ok, had no clue where to get parts or how to fix plastics. I was so new to this again since I was staring all over again and now had to remember things and also teach my son! So we will be tearing into the bear tracker to get her up and running again as well as maybe a few new cosmetic changes and hang on to her for a while since I love this bike. The last two pics are the bike the day we finished putting it all back together and when it was upstate for the first week. Had no intention of this post going so long. 🤷🏻♂️

Always something to do !! I hear you @Ajmboy ! I’ve been lucky lately to get some good riding time in with this new property. But with the rifle season about to open I need to stay off it for a while with the machines to let the deer settle down. It’s been a lot of set up and then riding time but this is the last weekend we are going up with the bikes to add one more stand and that’s it for a while with the bikes.

Hey James welcome to Quadcrazy. I would check to see if the cable is looped up someplace or kinked maybe it happened when you were routing wires ? Secondly I would check both ends of the throttle cable where it gets inserted into the cable holder at each end of the cable. One end at the carb and one at the throttle control on the handlebars. The cable inserts about a quarter inch into the adjuster so make sure that’s correctly seated on both ends. FYI the adjusters are also “adjustable” obviously so check that they are screwed in for proper slack. If all else fails then I would open the cover of the throttle and inspect it for proper operation and that nothing is stuck or garbage inside. Disconnect the cable on both ends and make sure it slides back and forth freely. Could anyone else have been around and touched the adjusters or cable ? I attached a few pics of where the cable goes into the adjuster just in case your not familiar what what I’m talking about. The last two pics are the cable end for the carb and the last pic is the carb that the cable screws on to. If that screw part has backed out any the idle will go up so make sure it’s all the way in. I think going the simple route first by checking the obvious (cable issues) is the way to go and based on the year of the bike it’s not a rev limiter or electronic problem. Aside from that it would be maybe a vacuum leak or a small crack on the intake rubber boot but not likely. Hope this helps.

2008 Suzuki king quad 750 fuel pump relay

My guess is that the power going to the relay is either not getting the proper voltage to hold it closed. Or it’s have a pulsing voltage that’s allowing the relay to not fully close. lastly I would check the ground and make sure it’s tight. Either condition will allow the contacts inside the relay to arc when they spot fully close and destroy the contacts hence a bad relay. So start by checkout voltages first and move on to grounds etc. -
Hey @Sonders welcome back! Hate when things are hectic and hold us back form tinkering and fixing but it is what it is! Glad to hear your going to get after it again! That plug your referencing is usually used where someone either has stripped the oil plug and used a repair kit. I’m hoping your right but be careful when dealing with it. As far as the oil being black it happens even if it’s fresh oil in the engine, when you drain the old oil out you still have remaining dirty oil in the case. That dirty oil stains the new oil so don’t worry about that too much. Hopefully everything will work out and your machine will be up and running in no time. Keep us posted.

2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 Instrument Cluster Issues

It could be a ground issue or a corroded fuse. I would go get some dielectric grease and start taking plugs and fuses apart, clean all areas and apply the grease and reconnect. Some plugs may be tough to get to since they are located under the front plastic right where that cluster is located so you may have to pull that plastic off.- 4 replies
