  1. ok. got some feeler gauges. will update you on how it runs. so just double checking so I dont screw up something: adjust it at TopDeadCenter when the valves are tighter (they still are loose, just dont have 1/4 inch gaps on that stroke)
  2. lol sorry I guess I wasnt saying that right..
  3. Ive never looked at the wiring on a polaris before I got this one so I was taking my friend's word for it since he owns two sportsmans on sportsmans, there is like a little gearbox for the shifter. the part that is stripped is not attached into the tranny
  4. ok but which tdc should I try it on? loose tdc or tight tdc? I guess thats what I was asking...lol
  5. its in time, but every other time I reach top dead center, the rocker arms are really loose, the tight, then loose, then tight.... every time I reach tdc.
  6. found one for $120 on ebay. anyone find one cheaper? and is any way I could redneck the old one to make it work? also, the shifter arm is stripped in the compartment on the tranny... weld or some other glue?
  7. Ok. The think that has me confused is the valves are at different clearances every other revolution at tdc.
  8. 12v going into the ecm and only like .4v coming out on only one of the wires. The ecm is where all the electricity stops. please correct me if I'm wrong though! I'm not looking forward to paying around $150 for my mistake...
  9. ok so the ecm appears to be fried. Can anyone give the specs for an ecm on a 04 sportsman 500?
  10. lol yea I was going to clean thew crab anyway... I'm pretty sure its gummed up inside..
  11. and I forgot to say that this is a Remington Special Edition, but its been wrecked or something cause it has green plastics on it now. heres a pic
  12. no I did not see any burnt wires or smell anything... the cables sparked a good deal when I hooked them up to the battery (I only had the cables reversed for maybe about 5 or 10 minutes) I am pretty sure there is no fuse.
  13. Got a 04 Sportsman 500 that wasnt running- owner said it needed a stater and a new battery. It ran rough (been sitting out in the weather for a while). A friend and I started by adding a new battery and it would start barely with the choke and his hand over the air-filter. I decided to install the new battery in the holder on the side. we had it on the rack because the old on was still in the bike. I tried to be nifty by turning the battery to put the terminals in an easier spot to get to, but forgot to reverse the cables too. In a sentence, I reversed the positive and negative on the battery like a dummy. When we discovered my mistake and corrected it, we turned on the bike, but the display did not light up and the key did not turn on the starter. jumping the solenoid worked the starter, so we thought the solenoid just burned up when I reversed the pos and neg... new solenoid and no difference. what have I burned up? Also, the shifter does not seem to do anything in the trans. it slides back and forth like its stripped in the trans. any help would be appreciated!! I think the biggest issue right now is the electrical.
  14. lol yea but there is such a thing as abusing your bike (awesomely fun) and never fixing anything on it- just patching up to work and going speeds over 70mph for a long period of time and just cooking the motor....(my friend does this) yea. exactly.👍👍👍😎
  15. If oil can get out, mud and other crap can get in. especially if its a cv boot
  16. yea this same guy posted a link on another thread that was about the same... be careful! There are service manuals on this site if thats what you are looking for.
  17. I agree. You might as well use lock tight since your the one assembling it.
  18. okiedokie.
  19. I wish...
  20. so which revolution do I set the valve clearance on?
  21. I have never ridden a 2 stroke anything so I better not say too much not knowing anything about 2 strokes... I've always herd that 4-strokes are all around better and hence have avoided 2-strokes... I've heard that 2 doesnt stay cool as well and hence has overheating issues after a longer ride...? And 2s only get but so big where as 4s go to 1000cc, that will always win over a 2, but I wouldn't know much other than that...? please correct me if I'm wrong
  22. thanks for that reply, Frank Angerano! I did not know what causes a stater to fail.
