2005 Arctic Cat 500 runs really rough and rich
cheatmaster300 posted a topic in Arctic Cat ATV Forum
I am working on a 500 that seems to have me stumped. The quad will start but will only run if I keep pumping the throttle. It smells like it is getting way to much fuel and the plug is always wet when I take it out. I took the carb apart and cleaned it really good twice. Still the same problem. So I swapped the carb with another working quad. That quad runs fine with the carb but the problem quad still runs the same. I swapped the coil this did not solve the problem either. I also checked the timing with a timing light and it seems to be good. I am not sure what I am missing. Any ideas? -

1983 Yamaha YT175 Fired up for the first time after total rebuild. Now I have no idea whats going on. Compression is 120, new plug, new fuel and oil lines, new choke and fresh fuel. Carb cleaned and reeds are good (no gaps). Will not start without choke and stalls out when choke is off. Played with choke adjustment and doesn't change. It fires up first pull and only idles if I play with idle screw. As soon as I touch throttle, it goes bezerk on me and I have to shut it down as you can see in video ....... You can here the recoil lever tinging in the video. I lost the spring. D"oh!! So far I have swapped ignition coil, spark plug, CDI with no change. I have removed flywheel to check keyway and it is where it should be. Checked resistance on stator ... I get 10ohms +/- 10% on pickup coil within specs as per manual and I get 273ohms on charge coil. Manual states 300ohms +/- 10%, so that is also within spec. I have also swapped out jet needle and played around with different settings. Eventually I put it back to the 3rd line. The engine already has new seals and bearing so I am completely baffled as to what I am missing here. Any takers? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks I have also swapped carbs from a running YT175. Same results.

Got the bike brand new in July of 2009. ran great, snorkeled it and tuned the snorkel so no mixture adjustment was necessary. it wasn't long before the bike was difficult to start. it will not start now without hitting the gas. even after the motor is nice and hot it won't start without getting on the throttle. then it idles rough once it starts. it sounds like the timing is off. There's a very faint black smoke from the exhaust, and the plug was black, so it appears as though it has been running rich. HOWEVER, I can take the airbox lid off and take the air filter out and it makes no difference. still has that black smoke and sputtering idle. it runs perfectly when you're riding it. no sputtering, no lack of power, nothing. side notes: the idle adjustment screw got really hard to turn, I have to use pliers now. the idle is sporadic, it's either about to stall or it's revving at 3000rpm. the choke only seems to work about half the time. could the choke be sticking and causing a rich condition at the carb?

07 grizzly 700fi runs rough, black smoke out the exhaust

Hi everyone how are you.I have a 2007 yamaha grizzly 700efi .One day out of nowhere my atv started to run really rough.turns over fine but i need to press the throttle for it to start and hold it here and there so the atv does not stall out.it does not stay idling.its really choppy at low revs and as i press the throttle it gets better almost normal in high revs.i have the original exhaust and i drilled out the baffle in it for better flow and i also installed a stealth exhaust.stealth exhaust is a extra exhaust and it acts like a silencer.i also noticed lots of black smoke coming out the exhaust. i had this set up for 3-4 years with out a problem till about a year ago. i tried lot of things like: new spark plugs, different spark plugs, new k&n filter, ignition coil, adjusted the valve clearance, swapped ecu, checked all fuses, took stealth exhaust off, drained old gas and put new gas in,and so far had no luck the atv is not showing any error codes.if anyone can help that would be great, thank you. -
I just bought this machine, it wouldnt even idle so I cleaned the carb and reassembled it, cleaned the tank, replaced the fuel line and set the carb to the initial settings per my manual. Now it idles rough and seems like it's running rich, i get black smoke out the muffler. I set the pilot screw to 2 3/4 turns out per the manual, have attempted to adjust it but it doesn't seem to react like it should. Any ideas?

hey guys. new hear. i just got a 95 big bear that ran fine when i looked at it, but now when i startit, it idles real bad. it runs for a bit at a higher idle, then dies right down and then dies. fire it back up and turn the idle screw in and it idles high. will run fine for a bit then stutters and idles down almost dies then lights up again, then a second later, dies. ive cleaned the carb the best i can . blew out the passages and tried again. still does the same . the air screw was bottomed right down. i opened it to about 2 turns out. seemed to bring the idle back up, then stuters and back down till almost dead, then dies. any suggestions?

Howdy, I have a problem with my 1994 Polaris 400l, it has been running bad for a while, the last time we took it out we had to change the plugs twice as they blackend/oiled up and the bike started running rough, i've stripped down the carb and cleaned it all out, i've checked the oil pump mix ratio, the reeds are seated correctly, the air cleaner is clean. the idle screw is wound all the way in and i still had to adjust the throttle cable at the control to get the bike to idle. low end is lumpy and the bike will not pull uphill, on a flat the bike will run smother once the bike gets moving but there's not the speed there used to be. I also checked the bottom of the piston and there appears to be no damage there, the engine sounds ok when it idles, oh and i also checked the exhaust and that appears to be ok. One more thing, the bike was put on it's side around 3 months ago and when it was restarted i had to turn up the idle screw so it would idle. Any advise would be great. Thanks.

I have a 2007 king quad 700. On the last ride I went on after about 2 to 3 hours of riding. It's start to spit and sputter and would not run right had to in up getting towed back to the truck. When we got back it started right up and ran fine but I haven't been back on a ride since. Just wondering if anyone had the same problem or would know what to do to fix it..thanks
