  1. isn't it called a bearing journal? (the place where the rod attaches to the crankshaft i mean.. and then yea, its a wrist pin that holds the piston to the rod correct me if I'm wrong
  2. checked it out again and the air screw is out all the way (had to screw it back in some so it wouldnt rattle lose and lose itself.. So does the slide need to go up more or stay down more?
  3. I would clean the carb first. Fairly easy to do and just because some pro did it doesnt mean he didnt screw it up
  4. you might consider something like this and then if its not spaced in enough, throw some spacers on it and it should work... depending on the bike's condition, I would go aftermarket on the tires and rims and throw a lift on the bike make it look sick.. maybe not the lift lol but you could really improve the quality and look with aftermarket rims and tires.. sorry when I said 'this', I meant this link https://www.motosport.com/product/?adpos=1o3&cc=us&creative=291553397478&device=c&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1pblBRDSARIsACfUG12lZFenXx-prWsjOvJzbjcvkXnXLv7JWorwwkhOuYZS6GQop71rlxAaAtpBEALw_wcB&key=ITP-Delta-Steel-Wheel&matchtype=&mrkgadid=3309195370&mrkgcl=500&network=g&product_id=ITP000D-X001-Y001&pssource=true&rkg_id=0&segment=badger
  5. maybe it flooded and was hydro-locked? That's what my sportsman did when I bypassed the fuel pump... overflowed and hydro-locked the engine while sitting..
  6. is it a slide throttle carb or a butterfly throttle carb? I hate the slide throttle carbs- every one I've worked on has issues with idling...
  7. my 500 has stiff aftermarket shocks on the rear that I wish weren't soo stiff- did sit down when I loaded it up with firewood tho.. maybe trade? jk I might can check to see what make they are, maybe you would consider buying something similar... heres what it usually looks like:
  8. I would check the choke and see if the throttle is sticking.. then maybe is your bike running rich? (you said it sped up when gas supply was cut)
  9. if it was rusted, you might want to remove your gas tank and clean it out with fresh gas and check your carb to make sure it doesnt have crap in the bowl
  10. it should fire if you spray a little starter fluid or carb cleaner in the air filter.. just be careful how much you load it up cause it can blow your head if you're not careful if it still doesnt fire, I would change the spark plug again and check valve clearance, compression, timing and oil level
  11. top end is fun to work on on the older bikes
  12. yep on my bayou, there were two big hex head looking plugs. one was about half way up on the differential and the other was on the bottom. You want to fill diff fluid up to the fill plug till it starts dribbling out
  13. I havnt had much experience with 2 strokes, but my friend had one that he complained about having starting issues (wouldnt start in cold weather)
  14. haha yea Ima prolly ask here and on a jet ski forum if I can find one- first time I've touched a jet ski sooo
  15. I dont think its fair to compare a (more) top-of-the-line sport atv to a ancient 2-stroke utility quad. If I were you, I would sell both and get a newer utility/sport quad. I would get a sportsman as I love them, but you do you. I've found that my 500 will accelerate as fast as I want (and it has a worn out belt)... even about made me pee my pants first time I pegged it and held straight to like 50mph in a couple seconds.. Thats one thing I admire about sportsmans... got the rack and build of a utility quad and then drives like the scrambler the xplorer is 2 stroke right? just now realizing I might have it mixed up with the expedition as well...
  16. ended up with the 7 atvs and a jet ski had to leave 5 of the little ones at my grandparents farm lol dont have a clue what to do with the jet ski
  17. I was about 12 when I was visiting my friend's house in AL. He had an 02 sportsman 500 sitting in the garage. I had never given quads any thought before that. I asked him "Can you teach me how to ride it?" He said "sure". I started out in low trying to get the hang of the throttle and all... then we left for home... I started dreaming about getting one and riding them and all- didnt know of anyone back home (VA) that had a quad. Drove my fam crazy with my ocd about them.. The next year we went back and he still had that same bike and let me ride it more and in high this time (still taking it slow) by the end of the visit, I was taking it at over 40mph and jumping and mudding it. Then last year I was down there he had just got his truck and we went trail riding and I drove the 500 and he drove his truck. At the end of the visit he looked on CL for me and the day before we left he took me out and I picked up a 97 bayou 300. It was my pride and joy until I started looking into what was wrong with it.... quickly went from $1000 into it to $2800 into it before I finally sold it a couple weeks back (learned a lot and lost a lot of $$$) Now my joyrider/work horse is an 04 sportsman 500 (walk down memory lane lol) now I'm fixing other people's quads and am up to 9 that I own (fixing up to sell)
  18. @powermaddd400ex, so how old are you now (if you dont mind saying)
  19. so it looks like my schedule (or rather, my dad's schedule) is full and I cannot come. Hope you guys have fun, maybe take some pics or vids and post them?
  20. new carb in, bike runs, but really rich (doesnt need or want choke cold and bogs if you goose the throttle) I'm not sure how to adjust these types of carbs yet so any help would be great. @wanrep, This replacement carb has one cable to it and that operated both slide and butterfly. It has an adjustment for the slide (so you can have the slide down more or less than the butterfly open. I just removed the second cable in the box where the throttle splits. I will try to upload some pics later- main issue is its starving for air (air filter is dirty in places like it got into some oil, but not bad) I will try to run it without the filter on and see if it makes any or much difference. Also, the clutch is too tight making it hard to shift. I have tried adjusting it out as far as it will go (with the adjuster on the side of the clutch cover), but it still lurches forward when put in gear and doesnt want to disengage when you let off the throttle for shifting.
  21. thanks I might have to do this on one or two of the bikes I picked up recently...
  22. haha yea that bike needed a lot of work yet- haven't regretted selling it!
  23. what do you mean by locked? Diff lock? Pegged (like throttle floored)?
  24. I hate it when I get a bike that someone else has tinkered with and screwed up something... They build and wire them the way they do for a reason....
  25. haha thats prolly what my bayou clutch looked like- had to adjust it wayyy tight to run and not slip- I couldn't have done anything about it tho cause any more money I sunk into it was money I lost...
