Elecrical output from beartracker flywheel.
DirtDemon replied to chrisok1's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
You should buy a manual, it is a must have for anyone who works on their own machines. You can call your local dealer and get the test specs for the components you need to test.- 4 replies

'07 Suzuki Eiger Headlight attachments broken
DirtDemon replied to ddwyerfire's topic in Suzuki ATV Forum
Yes, please post the year make and model of the atv. Harbor Freight tools carries plastic welders for pretty cheap, it would work much better than trying to glue it back on. I would recommend one of the units that use compressed air, they get better penetration than a hot iron alone. There are better types out there but they are much more expensive. Do that and post the video in this thread. The noise could be norma,l two strokes have a thrashy sounding idle by nature, if it is worse than normal, it could be an indication of worn crank main bearings, rod bearing or wrist-pin bearing.

First thing I would do from that point is keep pre-mixing your fuel, and properly block off the oil injection. Since you said running pre-mix improved things slightly you may just need to burn off the excess oil that may have accumulated in your crankcase. The oil injection system may have been putting to much oil to the motor. If that doesn't work, then you may be getting the oil from the counterballancer housing. Normally on a two stroke motor there will be oil on one side of the crank that is held out of the crankcase by a seal that goes on the outside of the crank bearing. Your motor looks to be a bit different than what I am used to seeing but there is definately oil on the outdrive side of your crank outside of the crankcase. This oil is for the counterballancer and the gears that run it, one on the crankshaft and one on the counterballancer. I also noticed that the oil pump you were talking about seems to be mounted in this area as well. I would guess that the pump circulates oil between the counterballancer and the gearbox which is separate from the rest of the motor. From what I can tell, you could be leaking oil from the counterballancer into the crankcase because the case center gasket is leaking or because the right hand side crank seal is leaking. It looks to me like you will have to remove the recoil starter, flywheel, stator, and the cover behind the stator to get to that seal. To get to every thing else you would have to split the case halves. The other crank seal even looks like it goes on the inside of the case.

outlaw 525 vs dvx400
DirtDemon replied to Honda250rider's topic in This vs. That ATV & Off Road Comparisons
I'm not saying they don't slide well, I'm just saying they don't do it as well as a solid axle machine, especially at higher speeds. The fully independent suspension allows the chassis to roll more, making it more prone to catch a tire and tip over. I have ridden them and I can confirm that they are slidable, but it gets a little sketchy if the rear tires aren't spinning fast enough, more so than on a solid axle machine. -
It sounds like oil is leaking into the crankcase, most likely crank seals, but it could be the center case gasket. I would start with the crank seals because they are cheap and easier. If you end up having to split the cases, you might want to change the crank bearings as well, since you are already in there.

outlaw 525 vs dvx400
DirtDemon replied to Honda250rider's topic in This vs. That ATV & Off Road Comparisons
I prefer the straight axle myself for the same reason, the IRS machines don't slide as well. I would definately try it before you buy it. They aren't for everyone, but if ground clearance is a big deal to you and you want an atv with a smooth comfy ride, then you may like the IRS. -
outlaw 525 vs dvx400
DirtDemon replied to Honda250rider's topic in This vs. That ATV & Off Road Comparisons
It would be similar to the Outlaw S, nothing is going to have as much ground clearance as an IRS machine. I would strongly recommend the Outlaw 525 over the 500, there is a huge difference in power. Not that the 500 is a bad machine, it still has an incredible ride and handles well, but the KTM motor in the 525 is alot stronger. -
Like Ajmboy said, check and double check the connections in the ignition system, especially the ones you have been working on. Try removing the kill switch you installed, a bad connection in that could be causing your problem.

I see, I was wondering why a fireman would be messing with water services. It makes alot more sense that utility workers would be handling stuff like that. I just broke a 4 inch water service that had an unlocated offset a couple of weeks ago. It was feeding a Coast Guard facility in Seattle. It made a huge mess in no time flat. Turns out it was one of three services feeding the base, so when we shut the valve, water was feeding back from the service side and we had to wait about 30 min for an escort so we could get to the valve on the other side of the gate. Water ended up making its way into the basement of one of their buildings so the fire dept had to come and pump the basement out.

outlaw 525 vs dvx400
DirtDemon replied to Honda250rider's topic in This vs. That ATV & Off Road Comparisons
Those 525's scoot pretty good, a friend of mine has the IRS version and it is suprisingly fast considering how heavy it is. I'm sure the solid axle version is a beast. -
That looks absolutely nuts, take care of yourself out there man, and don't worry about people thinking you guys aren't doing your job well, you know that's a bunch of crap and so do most of the rest of us. If it weren't for firefighters, it would be so much worse, they just can't see that because they are upset about losing their home or car, and some of them are just jealous because they aren't as much of a man as you guys are. Good luck to you and your fellow firefighters.

Yup, sounds like you have an air leak and maybe a gummed up carb too, a very bad combo. You may not have siezed the motor, but you still may have ruined the piston. It does not take long to melt a hole in the top of a piston, things get very hot, very fast when there is too much air and not enough fuel. You can start with a compression test, but you will more than likely have to take the cylinder off to find the problem, check the piston, rings, cylinder bore, check the head and cylinder for warpage, and replace the head gasket and cylinder base gasket.

BRP 2001 DS650 looking for more power
DirtDemon replied to DSdunrider's topic in Can-Am BRP ATV Forum
A turbo kit will give massive power gains, but you need to be sure it gets tuned right. Forcing massive amounts of air into an engine can be disasterous if you aren't adding enough fuel. Use your search engine to look up atv turbo kits, find something you like, and then call the manufacturer and talk to someone who knows what they are doing. -
2003 Polaris Predator 500 timing keeps jumping
DirtDemon replied to fcryan09's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
I always recommend Service Honda for OEM parts, they are much cheaper than getting parts from a dealer. If the tensioner is still good and is adjusted properly, you probably have a worn timing chain and/or sprockets. -
I wish you a speedy recovery and good luck dealing finances. It may actually be a good thing that you got laid off, since you can't claim unemployment benefits if you get hurt and can't work. I have pulled that same move with the puddle, and I cracked a couple of ribs and got some nice bumps and bruises but I was able to ride home although my steering stem was best so bad that the handle bars were practically sitting on top of the gas tank.

Thanks, it is one less thing I have had to deal with, my life is crazy enough with a disabled child and a mentally ill brother. The last thing I need is to have to deal with the aftermath of someone elses poor choices. Thankfully I have still not had anymore problems with that particular situation. My sister is still off screwing up, but she is almost healed up and she has moved to another area, away from the douchebag.
-
Thanks for all of the positive thoughts, I do appreciate the kind words. I took my self a little vacation with the family to clear my thoughts, I feel alot better now. Recharged and ready to deal with whatever comes of this situation. However, the friend that house-sat for me didn't have any issues and from what I hear through the dirty grapevine, people are getting the word that it would be best to leave me alone. I don't associate much with these people, but there are a few people in that messed up circle that know me well from when we were younger, and are "encouraging" people to leave me alone. So hopefully things will be returning to normal soon.

It's almost time for FOOTBALL!
DirtDemon replied to Sparrows's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
I am a Seahawks fan by nature, but I have always liked the Steelers, except for when they beat us in Superbowl 40. That was a very controversial game, and while it may or may not have changed the outcome of the game, I would have liked to have seen it go the way it should have, with better officiating it would have been a much better game. It took me a couple of years to get over it, but I did find myself rooting for the Steelers last year in the playoffs. I guess time does heal all wounds. -
I have an LTR 450 and I love it. It's a little wide for some really tight trails, and lacks ground clearance with the 20/18 tire combo. I went to a 22/20 tire setup, and dropped the front sprocket 1 tooth to compensate for the larger tires. It has worked really well for me, it only has a cherry bomb and K&N intake and it is comparable in to a CRF 250R in quickness and speed. I ride with a girl who rides the same bike and she can never get by me on the logging roads we ride on, but I can take the curves at full speed and drift the sharper turns, where she cannot. The YFZ is also a good choice, probably the machine I would have chosen myself, had I not found such a good deal on my LTR. Whatever you get, make sure you look it over very well. 450's are very high strung machines, if not properly cared for they can be an expensive disaster waiting to happen. I love my 450, the old two strokes are so much cheaper to work on.

A 450 or larger would be the only thing as fast or faster than a stock Banshee. The Banshee really comes alive with a set of good pipes though, the stock exhaust is garbage. I might go as far as to say that a piped Banshee would be as fast or faster than any stock 4-stroke on the market, if not, it would not take much more to make it so. Banshees are good machines, a set of good pipes is a must though, and they are not the best handling quad by any means, but they do much better with some wider a-arms, a wider axle and some decent shocks. For the money you are looking to spend, I would look at some TRX 250R's, they handle great in stock form, have ton of aftermarket availability, and can be made very fast for very little money, downside, no reverse, but still one of the best quads available still today. If you can find a good 450 for that price you shouldn't be disappointed, but most of the models that come with reverse are going to be newer and not likely to be in your rice range.

If it runs good and is in good, solid condtion, then yes that would be a a good deal.

By the way, I merged this with your spark plug thread since the topic is still kind of the same. I also moved it into the Yamaha forum since this has turned into a technical help thread.

That is cute, maybe your dog can ride it.

What does the smoke smell like? The heat range of a spark plug refers to the amount of heat that it dissipates from the cylinder, a hotter plug will dissipate heat more slowly keeping it hotter in the combustion area, a cooler plug dissipates heat faster and thus the combustion area will stay cooler. It has nothing to do with the power of the spark. However, high octane race fuels burn cooler, so a hotter plug probably won't hurt anything, but the increased compression should make sure that the fuel gets burned as it should. If you aren't burning fuel completely, the smoke will most likely be black. If it is oil burning, the smoke will be blue. You said the smoke was white, which indicates water/antifreeze is getting in the cylinder, that is usually caused by a bad head gasket, but it could be a cracked water jacket in the head or cylinder, or it could be a warped head. Smell the smoke, antifreeze will have a kind of sweet smell when it burns.
