Maybe just the brushes inside the starter. But good luck either way. 👍

96 big bear 4x4 no neutral light
Frank Angerano replied to Josh Cornelius's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
Lol, new everything !!!! yea something catastrophic has happened. Hopefully it was limited with the damage. I would def replace the ignition switch. Unfortunately there is no way to test the cdi. And they can be costly. I would continue testing everything before you pick up a cdi as per the repair manual specifications and go from there. I didn’t realize that you replaced the stator coil. That ignition should be replaced to rule out the neutral light. Or any other contacts inside the switch aren’t making proper contact. Have you double checked that the neutral light bulb is good as well as testing of your wires leading to the bulb ?- 37 replies

Ok gotcha. Never knew the name of it. Was the head or valve covers look like they were ever taken off ? Maybe not put back in properly? I’ve heard that in some instances the crank case vent lines get clogged or pinched and build up pressure inside the engine pushing on them. I would make sure that the engine is vented properly and all vent hoses are clear. Maybe reinstall with a good gasket adhesive and let them dry for 24 hours before running.

That’s going to be a tough part to find. I would keep checking eBay and maybe a few other web pages. But they will charge through the roof! Hopefully you can find a used on and get it rebuilt.- 2 replies

Yamaha 400 Kodiak 4x4 help please.
Frank Angerano replied to Alan Callison's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
That part I put an arrow on the handle is the part that pushes the plunger on the second picture where I circled. That plunger is what activates the break. -
2004 Yamaha Kodiak 400 Ultramatic help
Frank Angerano replied to Alan Callison's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
Take a 4x4 piece of timber and place it on the end of the axle. I’m not sure if there is anything locking it in place, axles are not my department but if not then use a block of wood. With a good lump hammer. -
I’m confused. “L” plug ? Post a pic maybe we can help you out.

96 big bear 4x4 no neutral light
Frank Angerano replied to Josh Cornelius's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
So yes the cdi coul have taken a hit if that wire is burnt up. Most likely a momentary cross of the battery terminals or someone cranking the hell out of it while jumping it with a car. One or the other. It would suck if someone had put the battery wires on the wrong spot. They may have changed the main fuse after there mistake so you may never know. Have you tested the stator coil ? Ohm meter? Test?- 37 replies

Yamaha 400 Kodiak 4x4 help please.
Frank Angerano replied to Alan Callison's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
That lever you have should work fine. No extra parts. -
If it’s clicking it’s most likely working. Do some testing first. Take a tester and put it on the relay lug that goes to the starter. Hit the start button and see if you get 12 volts. If so then it may be a a starter issue. Like brushes or the starter itself. I will look up the part number and see if I can post it. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F262071154868

Should be located under the seat. There are two. Right near the battery, one you can follow is the red wire (positive) big wire should lead right to the starter solenoid, the second relay will be right next to it and should have a plug with four smaller wires going onto it.

96 big bear 4x4 no neutral light
Frank Angerano replied to Josh Cornelius's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
Hey Josh. Welcome to Quadcrazy. There are a few different relays on that bike. One is dedicated just to the neutral operation that brings the light on. Have you checked that relay? Also the relay brings in a few other relays as well so you have to make sure that all relays have a power supply 12v going in and a ground going in as well Power to the relays allows them to close and complete ignition and starter circuits. So if your handy with a tester I can help you through it. Also you said you tested the neutral safety switch? There is a wire on that switch. Take a look at the diagram it’s indicated as “Sb”. That wire essentially is grounded when the bike is in neutral bringing on the light. Put a jumper from ground to that wire and see if the light comes on. And then go to all the relays and see if you have a 12v feed and ground wire going into it. Also have you tested the stator coil?- 37 replies

Wow you guys got me thinking !!!! Going to have to look at that for the next winch. See how it reads and go from there. But it sounds interesting.
-
You will be fine brother. Post some pics and let us know how you make out.
-
It sounds like a good point. it comes down to preference and maintenance I guess. Im sure we will hear from a few more members on this !
-
I agree with @Boozy you have to be careful. We all had this conversation with a recent topic that was posted on buying a used bike. There are priceless tips from the members that have been through the ringer. Some good and some bad situations. Take a look at that topic if you can and if you have any questions ask away. This is a forum you will actually enjoy. Tons of info here at Quadcrazy. Now aside from that I have to say you will be shocked with the speed of a bike like that. Don’t under estimate the power or the year of that bike. You will love it, especially if it’s in stock condition. Be sure to post some pics and even if there is no pink slip, a bill of sale with the vin# on it and the sellers name and signature is binding. You shouldnt have a problem. Good luck and welcome to Quadcrazy!

Where did you order them from if I may ask ?
-
Have you checked the compression ring where the exhaust bolts up to the engine?
-
That’s a great question. I just received the mounting plate for my bike. I’m going to throw it on this weekend along with the winch.. I personally think the metal is better for just that reason alone of getting wet. I think you have more options if and or something happens to the cable. You can always cut it and add a Crosby clip and boom you are good to go. Don’t think you can do that with the nylon.

1997 Kawasaki Bayou 300 2x4 (klf300b) Runs Bad

Do the rockers get tight at any location/point while your rotating the engine ? -
Haha jacking the ceiling. That’s great sounds like my father lol. Believe it or not I’m fabricating a stand that I can jack the bike up with that jack and put the bike on the stands, remove the jack and roll another bike under it. I call it my atv bunk bed project. I am running out of room!!!
-
I seen that limit. The reason why I ordered it is I’ve seen it in person and it’s solid. I seen it pick up a 500 lbs bike with ease. Not saying that the seals could not blow out on the hydraulic pump but I don’t plan on leaving the bike on the lift while I’m working on it. I have something for that I’m going to post soon. I want this for getting the bike in the air and it will be coming out from under the bike as soon as it’s up in the air.
-
Take a look at this. I just ordered it. Wondering what your thoughts are ? I mainly like to get my bikes up In the air so I’m not killing my back any more. I either build up some stuff I have laying around etc but this looks like it’s going to work out well. Starting the engine first time in a year
Frank Angerano replied to bradleyheathhays's topic in General ATV Discussion
I would leave the plug out and move the spark plug wire off to the side in a safe spot and crank the engine a few times. Everything that’s in the head should blow out of the plug hole or onto the exhaust which will eventually come out of the exhaust or burn off after start up. Cranking the engine will also allow the oil to pump through the engine and lube everything up as well. Was the carburetor ran dry before you sat the bike ? If not then the carburetor will need to be cleaned. And I would put a new spark plug in as well. After you get it running and a warmed up then you can change the oil once safely cooled off enough to touch.- 1 reply
