1998 Polaris Xplorer 400L Clutch Trouble?
outlander560 replied to IndyKWG's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
i have not taken my primary clutch apart...but my best assumption would be that the primary clutch spring is worn causing the belt torun high on the clutches and wear out.... here is a link to all the parts for your clutch...CheapCycleParts.com's 1998 Polaris ATV XPLORER 400 (W98CC38C) Parts List -
1998 Polaris Xplorer 400L Clutch Trouble?
outlander560 replied to IndyKWG's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
lol no problem...it would be an orange or silver nob with a groove in it that allows you to use a flat head on it...it is on the right side of the motor behind the pull start...it wont solve the problem your having but it is something you should check from time to time on a 400L two stroke motor.. So not to change the thread topic completely did you decide what to do with you clutches? -
1998 Polaris Xplorer 400L Clutch Trouble?
outlander560 replied to IndyKWG's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
instead of buying a whole new primary clutch why dont you just buy a new spring and rollers. That should fix the belt slippage problem, and possibly give you more power as well...btw not towards the topic question but have you checked the counterbalancer oil? -

bummer sorry it didnt work out -
welcome to quadcrazy....first thing you will need is to find the serial number, either on the frame or on the engine which would tell you the type of model it is. Second, i recommend getting a shop manual for it, it will help you a lot with big and small problems. Finally for parts i get parts from cheapcycleparts.com and bikebandit.com **moved thread**

1994 polaris sportsman project
outlander560 replied to outlander560's topic in ATV & Off Road Modifications
well got some bad news....brought the polaris to the dealer. they looked at it, drained the counterbalancer oil and saw it was milky, turns out the pump for the water cooler leaked into the counterbalancer unit and did something to it, he said the engine would need to be taken apart 200 dollars, and then buy 700 dollars worth of parts, and thennnnn put it back together for another 200, sooo my uncle and i are taking it apart ourselves and if there diagnosis is correct we are either rebuilding ourselves or putting a bigger motor in it....so the project is going to be delayed for another couple months -
Did you just mod the dry end of the clutch or the wet end also? I modded it a little while back..
-
ahaha my fault that would make a lot of sense....

SOHC stands for Single Overhead Camshaft. That means that there is only one camshaft per header. Inline engines will contain one camshaft. V-type and/or flat will contain 2 camshafts. For a SOHC engine there are usually 2 valves per cylinder but there can be more with the addition of cams for each valve. DOHC stands for Double Overhead Camshaft. Now there are 2 camshafts per header. So in an inline there are 2 camshafts because there is only one header, but there is 4 in a V-type or flat engine. These DOHC engines usually have 4 valves. One camshaft for the exhaust valves and the other for the intake valves. Advantages to having a DOHC engine over a SOHC is that the engine has twice as many intake and exhaust valves as a SOHC motor. This makes the engine run cooler and more smoothly, quietly, and efficiently. But the downfall is that DOHC engines cost more for repairs. More info on SOHC Engines Vs. DOHC Engines

highlifter makes the 2 inch lift kits eh idk i think its a bit to much for stock axles really wears the boots down..and puts a sharp angle on the axles For your polaris the lift kit will only lift the back. I think the kit comes with spring spacers for the front because they dont sell lifts for the mcpherson strut. I have the moose industries lift kit on my atv. Very simple design very strong and incredibly easy to install and is much cheaper. But its a 1 or 1.5 inch lift instead of 2 inch lift
