  1. if you put car oil in, you jepordize the clutch. just saw your last post. car oil will be ok for the engine part of it, but may give you a false reading that the clutch slips etc...
  2. ebay has good prices on kits, you'll have to do some research on the different brands. some will give you more of this, but take away some of that. myself, i would go OEM if not too outrageous in price.
  3. you have to use atv oil, there are additives in the oil for the transmission. 10 40 is about standard. i would go to synthetic myself, doesn't take much to fill the crankcase, so it isn't as expensive as a car oil change. you could even go 5 40 or 0 40. the lower the first #, the easier it is to crank over. the higher the second #, the heavier it is. 0-5 40 would be good in cold climates, and 40 weight is about standard ...
  4. will the start button come apart? sometime it could be a bad contact ... all fuses good also?
  5. cool trick, just be careful of who starts it i guess ...
  6. i'm pretty sure the air cooled bikes run hot like that. i know my big bear could cook my breakfast ...
  7. hey good to know !! amazing what you can find in those manuals on my big bear, i think it's on or near the rear brake ...
  8. what year is your 500?
  9. hello and welcome here ... nice find !! i wouldn't worry about the oil and shavings, who knows if it's the first oil change? plus the age of the bike, if it's running good now and shifting well, i wouldn't do anything really except ride it .... there is a clutch adjustment on the right side, while sitting. looks like a slotted screw inside a nut. in the yamaha forum, there is a thread for manuals there, post #3 has the service manual for your bike ...
  10. sounds like dirty connections. starter wire from relay/solenoid is good, so i'd check everything back up to the handlebars ... OR the relay may be bad altogether
  11. i would love to go there, but there is the distance problem with me. sounds like a good time !!

  16. the carb is probably still plugged somewhere. compressed air seems to be the key after it's cleaned. when you clean it again, use some twist ties from garbage bags, (stripped) and run them through the small passages. also check the rubber manifold for cracks, the rubber that goes from the carb to the block ...
  17. the new carb should be ok with everything hooked up to get fuel. the bowl should fill as soon as the petcock is turned on. any machine that has sat will usually need the fuel dumped and the carb cleaned. hopefully the fuel was turned off which would have minimumized varnsihing. good luck !!
