Polaris Sportsman 500 EFi stalling problem
DirtDemon replied to craneman's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
I have not experienced this problem because I don't own a Polaris, but if the fan isn't coming on, and the machine is getting too hot, there could be a thermal overload switch that shuts the machine off when it gets too hot. Are there any overheat warning lights on the machine? You could try to wire the fan to a switch so it stays on (temporarily) and see if the machine will keep running then. It could also be a problem with one of the secondary ignition components; stator, cdi, coil, regulator/rectifier. Sometimes these parts will begin to malfunction as they get warm. -
1997 Polaris Xplorer 400 4x4 Recharge spare battery
DirtDemon replied to treetops's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
If it fits,a and it is a 12v lead acid battery, then I don't see why you would have any problems. Although, since you likely won't be alble to start the bike on a battery that is run to low, you need to remove the fresh battery after you start it and install the weak battery while the machine is running, and that is not a great idea, it usually does no harm, but it is possible that a spark could ignite the explosive gasses from the battery and you will be in a world of hurt. So you need to be carefull not to run the utility battery too low unless you have a backup pull or kick starter. -
If you are used to riding dirtbikes, then I would guess you are looking at sport quads. What would be best for you depends on what kind of riding you do, track, trails, dunes, etc... Let us know a little more about what you intend to use it for and I'm sure every one will be happy to offer thier opinions.

2006 yamaha raptor 350 electrial testing
DirtDemon replied to astrodogg71's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
If the kill switch is good, and you have no power at the coil, then there is a problem with the connection between the kill switch and the coil. Get out the electrical tester and start at the battery and start checking for continuity between every junction, switch, component and what not. Check your ground wires. Double check that kill switch, with the key on, there should be power at one pole of the kill switch, when you turn the kill switch to on, there should be power at the other pole. -
No problem, we are here to help one another, anytime you need anything, we will be here. When I bought my LTR, my dealer recommended that I put the battery on a trickle charger overnight every month to make sure that every thing stays fully charged. I don't know why that would be necessary if you ride it alot since the alternator keeps the battery charged, but if it sits for long periods, then it is probably a good idea.

1993 Polaris Trailboss 350 not starting
DirtDemon replied to hawlinbass's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
New crank seals are a good idea at any time since it can't hurt to replace them. If you find the problem before you install the new seals, then you will have them if you ever need them. I would test your igniton components ie; stator, pickup, cdi, coil, spark plug and make sure you have a good connection between the coil wire and the plug boot. You may have spark, but it may not be strong enough. Do you have a manual? It would have info needed to do the tests on your ignition components. If you can get it to run, check the timing. Maybe even try adjusting the timing a little just to see if it helpls get it started. -
Try to test ride all of them and see which one feels best to you, that will probably be the best platform to start with. Being comfortable is probably the most important thing since all of the major manufacturers make great performing 450's. They all have their high and low points and what one guy likes about one, the next guy might hate.

If your alternator is putting out power, and no charge is going to the battery, then it is most likely the rectifier/regulator that is bad. Or a bad ground somewhere.

Best Full Exhaust Set-Up for an 06' Honda 400EX

Both of those you mentioned are good brands, there are other good ones too. I would just look around for a good deal on something you like. -
1993 Polaris Trailboss 350 not starting
DirtDemon replied to hawlinbass's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
It really sounds like a timing issue, but I think that the crank seals would be a good place to start, since they aren't too expensive. I had alot of hard starting that was cured when I replaced the crank seals. If the motor is sucking air in through the crank seals, it won't draw fuel in as well. However it should still show some life when you use starting fluid. Try pulling the plug and spray the starting fluid directly into the cylinder. What does the plug look like? Is it really oily? Another thought, if it has been sitting for a while, some gummed up fuel could have plugged up the carb while you were riding. -
I don't know if I would like all the brakes being controlled by one lever or not. It seems simpler, but when going up or down steep hills, I like to have the option of using one or the other. There is alot of good info there. I am going to move this thread into the This vs that forum. I also added the manufacturers' names to the title.

I agree with bot, that you should feel each one out and see what feels most natural for you. I have an LTR, and I love it. It is designed for track riding, it is already low and wide and for $40 you can get a 7hp boost with a cherry bomb. It feels much more stable due to the wide stance and the fuel injection makes throttle response amazingly smooth, and jetting for the seasons or altitude is not a concern. On the other hand, if you start doing motor mods, you need an adjustable fuel programmer, they are around $300 or so, but it is still easier than changing jets in a carb. I also just got an '04 TRX, it is similar to my buddies '08, except the '04 has a little more low end torque, while the '08 has a quicker revving motor. I like the TRX well too, but they are very different machines. The TRX is not as stable in the corners, but it is noticeably lighter and fly's a bit easier. One other reason I like the Honda is the simplicity, one cam and everthing is much easier to access on the compared to my LTR. Truth all the major manufacturers make good machines, and what is best for one person might not be the best for another. My personal opinon is, if you plan to ride mostly on the track, and you don't mind spending the money, check out the KTM sx models. I had a chance to ride the 505 sx, I was seriously impessed. It was by far the best handling and fastest stock quad I have ever ridden.

Yeah, that backhoe works great, I brought that out there last weekend. The weekend before, I had a small excavator. It was ok, but it's slow and you can't move large amounts of dirt at once like you can with the backhoe.

There is one jump that could be decent, but the track is a bit short, it is hard to get enough speed up to really get good air one way, and not enough room to land properly going the other way. It is still a work in progress, and it may be a while before I get a chance to get any more equipment out there. I can take it home from work, but they don't like people to abuse the privilage too much. But it is a nice place to hang out, barbeque and put around a bit on the bikes.

Well, I had a ton of good pics and some video, but I can't find the files, the just dissapeared somehow. I did manage to find one pic and one kind of crappy vid of me on my 500R and a friend on a 400ex. There was a cool vid of me unloading the quad from the back of the trailer with the back hoe. There was just enough room to fit it on the loading ramps behind the tractor. I gently scooped the bucket under the frame and carefully picked it up and set it on the trailer. And a good one of me doing a little smoke show on the street in front of the house. If I ever find the rest of the pics and vid, I will surely post them.

Connections could definately be the problem, check them all, including the spark plug boot to the coil wire. There are tests you can perform to check your electrical and ignition components. A manual or maybe a dealer service tech can help you with that.

Good to hear, my younger brother had one of those for his first quad, it was really a great machine.

1993 Polaris Trailboss 350 not starting
DirtDemon replied to hawlinbass's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
Check the flywheel key, if it has sheared off, you can still have spark, but not at the right time. I suppose that the backfire blowing a crank seal out is feasable, it wouldn't hurt to check them.
