    timing may be ok, valves need to be adjusted once a year usually ... if a bike gets harder and harder to start, its usually the valves ... and backfire occurs when valves are opening or closing at the wrong time ...

    i have a 98 warrior service manual in this yamaha forum. it will show the specs for timing, and you will want to check the valves because they sound out too.

    have you checked the drive belt? could be narrowed beyond spec and not grabbing the clutch...

    i havent replaced mine yet, but get the bearing out and take the measurment OR if the yamaha dealer has them in stock, get their number so sk can cross it, or get a set of calipers and measure it.

    My top 2 picks if i was to buy new today would be either a Honda or Yamaha. Owned and rode both and find them to be great machines. Honda are a little more money than Yamaha, but equally as good IMHO. Yamaha seems to deliver more bang for the dollar. Any of the major brands now are good machines and i would persuade everyone to stay away from the Chinese ATVs. Again, JMHO ...

    it might depend if the cdi is different between the years, and if your wiring harness has the proper connections for the new head ... look online at Motorcycle Parts, Motorcycle Accessories by BikeBandit.com and compare the part #s from year to year ...

    a good pair of c-clip pliers will do it. i wrestled with those clips alot too. i stormed off one day and i paid 60+$ and got a good pair with different "pins" you can change up via allen/hex key lockers. Mine had the "pins" or teeth to remove, not the whole plier end.
