should i buy a $500 polaris predator 500?
DirtDemon replied to mike13ortega's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
I guess most 14 year olds won't be getting a tax return, so maybe you should hit your parents up when they get theirs. Do some real serious brown nosing over the next couple weeks. -
Storing a machine dirty for a while wont really do any harm. Never cleaning it is different. Dirt is abrasive, so any moving parts will wear prematurely if they are always dirty. I am not real big on washing my machines to a shine, in fact, they always look dirty. However, I do like to give them a good hosing after riding to knock most of the dirt off the machine and then I lube everything.

A buddy of mine has an '04 Rancher 350, that thing is as slow as they come, but tough. He has had it since it was new and ridden the crap out it. It has taken an extreme amount of abuse and it has a loose rear end now, but it was never made to go through the hell it has been put through. I am suprised the thing even works at all.

Wheel hop traction issues on King Quad 500 axi
DirtDemon replied to IDFYF8's topic in Suzuki ATV Forum
Are you using the stock wheels? If you are using aftermarket wheels with a wider offset, it will make the suspension softer, and could be contributing to the mushy feel and wheel hop problem. -
The big Raptors are the most wheelie happy machines I have ever ridden, so you have the right quad for it. Just keep practicing, you will get it, it is just a matter of feeling out the balance of the machine like Bot told you.

I would think that they pull just like a trailer. -
should i buy a $500 polaris predator 500?
DirtDemon replied to mike13ortega's topic in Polaris ATV Forum
If you are looking for a quad for $500 or less, most all you will find is basket cases like that or bikes without titles. It's not that there aren't bargains out there, but most of these machines will need work and $$$ to make them right. You need to take a good look at these machines to determine if it is worth the trouble. Look at the motor oil, check for evidence of broken internals like metal pieces and shavings and see if the oil has water in it. It is likely that many of these machines will not run when you buy them, but you will want to see how the motor turns, if it does not roll over freely, there are real problems inside. Wiggle the bike around and literally kick the tires to check the condition of the bearings throughout the machine. Will it need brakes, tires, cables? All of these things add up quick. Like Outlander said, if you aren't good with a wrench, you may want to pass on the basket cases and save your money until you can afford a decent machine. Tax time is right around the corner, maybe that will help you, I know I have most of mine already spent. -
An excellent point sir, you just made me feel better about my quads never being clean.

15 minutes is 15 minutes, I can't say I wouldn't have tried something just as desperate. I once bolted a spring post back on my clutch center from the back so I could ride the next day. I knew it was a bad idea, I even had a new one ordered up, but my friends were going out and I couldn't stand it. It worked fine all day, but I was constantly worried that it was going to give.

Too bad Trikemaster had to be such a brat, his trike entry was very nice. -
I have found that if you hit a big jump with more speed, you have more forward inertia and it helps to smooth out the landings. If you have less speed, you more or less fall to a landing, much rougher. I am not, however, saying that it doesn't scare the crap out of me sometimes when I get a little more air, but the landings are often smoother.

I am sure it will be ok, I sometimes leave mine dirty for months, just check and clean the important stuff before you ride again.

Quite nice of you to offer the help Opie, I am just wondering though if you noticed that he last posted in this thread almost a year ago? I am curious how things have gone on that project though. Maybe he will come back and update one of these days.

1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250; found pin in motor.
DirtDemon replied to tommyis3's topic in Yamaha ATV Forum
No problem. BTW, I changed the thread title. -
A Honda 400EX would be a much better machine for the rider on a budget who still wants some decent performance.

Could be that your air cleaner is getting dirty also. I would be sure to mention the problem to the service techs if you plan on taking it in to have the service done.

2000 Arctic Cat 300 running issues..Please help!!
DirtDemon replied to fireman2828's topic in Arctic Cat ATV Forum
The float bowl vent usually comes straight up through the bottom of the float bowl, and yes, it should have a hose connected to it. -
Does that mean you like the Ohlins better than the Elkas? Were you running the Ohlins/Laeger setup in that vid?

You just take the valve cover off and slide a feeler guage between the cam lobe and rocker arm. They are adjusted by loosening the jam nut on the valve end of the rocker arm and screwing the adjustment screw in the center of the jam nut. Consult a repair manual or dealer tech for clearance specs. As far as the side cover leak goes, I think that the throttle cable cover is the only cover there is and I doubt that that cavity has an air tight seal from the carb venturi, so it should be air tight. Like I mentioned before, you may as well just replace all fo the o-ring gaskets in the carb, they are cheap, and you really should replace the missing parts you mentioned before as well. You will want to take the float bowl off too, if you haven't already, and make sure the there is no varnished fuel residue in the bowl, and make sure that the bowl vent is not clogged. You will also want to check the float adjustment. The fuel screw, or pms screw adjustment can affect the idle as well. It is best to get the carb properly tuned before you set the idle screw adjustment. -
I think you may have just inspired me to buy some new shocks for my LTR, that thing really seems to soak up the big jumps pretty well. I can't tell exactly what you have on there in the pics you posted, judging by the red color of the top of the shocks I would guess that those are Elkas. What are they exactly, and how do you like them?

I have actually had vehicles run worse because I timed them with a light, as a motor wears, mods are made or other conditions change, the optimal timing changes a bit. So, that being said, a good ear is sometimes really a better way to time an engine than by setting the timing according to the manufacturers recommended settings. But, if you want to know exactly where the timing is, a light is the best way to check it.

If it is too small, it will restrict airflow and make it run rich. Take the snorkel off and see what happens. The thing that makes me think that you have a stuck float or bad seal on the float valve is that you said that you noticed fuel in the air cleaner. This is caused by fuel flooding the float bowl and coming up though the jets into the carb throat and into the air box. Stumling on the low end can also be helped with a fuel screw adjustment or smaller pilot jet.
