Thankyou Quadcrazy for moving the thread. Cowboy, if you need to ask all those questions, you will be best off getting a repair manual if you want to do work on your own machine. To check the valve lash, you will need to remove the fuel tank and some of the plastic body work, so you can get to the valve cover. Then you need to remove the valve cover. Use a feeler guage to slide between the cam and the bucket tappets that sit atop the valves. The valves need to be completely closed when being measured. Refer to your owners manual for clearance specs. Be careful when replacing the valve cover, you don't want to pinch the gasket, make sure the gasket stays in the groove of the valve cover when you put the cover back on. I would rate the work as not difficult, but that is all relative to your own mechanical inclination.

Not hard at all, there are two switches located on the front of the motor beside the oil filter. The fan switch and the oil lamp switch, I believe the fan switch will be the one on the left as you are looking at the front of the motor. I would inspect or replace the gasket too.

Good deal, glad to hear she is alive again, have fun with it.

I don't know if you need a complete valve job, but I think your friend may be on the right track. The first thing I would do is check for air leaks and pop the valve cover off and check the vavle lash. They may need to be adjusted. You need to check the vavle fairly regularly on these high performance 4-strokes. If your vavles are ok, do a compression test, running hot and losing coolant could mean a bad head gasket. Also check your oil, make sure there is no water/coolant in there.

2000 Arctic Cat 300 running issues..Please help!!
DirtDemon replied to fireman2828's topic in Arctic Cat ATV Forum
Maybe the problem isn't the carb at all, you might want to check the valve lash and do a compression test, maybe check for air leaks. -
Great fun, we don't usually get much snow over here, but this year is supposed to be an exception. Hopefully there will be lots more of it.

This first pic was taken Monday night, my wife is standing in about a foot of snow. It was a little deeper there from the wind, but we had a good 8-10" on the ground by Tuesday morning when the next pic was taken. The other two were taken Tuesday afternoon after I got done playing with the 500R. I got to play in the snow for a good three days straight. Rode both quads around and took my car to some empty parking lots for some snow donuts. Note the snow stuck in the wheels of the Subaru.

Honda Fourtrax 300 swing arm bolt came off
DirtDemon replied to Fourtrax_300's topic in Honda ATV Forum
Yes, I would use red Loctite on the swingarm nut. Also make sure that the nut is torqued down properly. I had the same thing happen, and I almost lost the swingarm, after the nut fell off, the bolt worked itself almost half way out. I was running wide open if 5th gear down a paved road, when I stopped, I saw the swingarm bolt sticking out. I got a new nut, and put plenty of red Loctite on the bolt, hasn't come loose since, and this is on a CR 500 powered quad that vibrates parts off constantly. -
My best guess tells me that the fuel pump was put there for a reason. I don't know much about these vacuum operated pumps on 4 strokes. I suspect that they may be more of a fuel valve than an actual pump. If that is the case, I don't see why the machine wouldn't run off of the gravity fed fuel from the tank. I would just give it a try and see if it works, I would put a shutoff valve in the line though. I know some two stroke engines, use vacuum operated fuel pumps, but they use the alternating vacuum state/ pressure state of the crackcase to actually pump fuel.
-
Sounds like you are pushing air/fuel into the crankcase because your piston/rings aren't holding compression. Common problem with high performance 4-strokes. My LT-R is starting to do the same thing. I suppose bad valve guide/seals could cause the same problem. Check the oil and see if it smells like gas.

2000 Arctic Cat 300 running issues..Please help!!
DirtDemon replied to fireman2828's topic in Arctic Cat ATV Forum
It may not be adjusted improperly, it could just be getting stuck. I would get a repair manual for your machine, anything you need to know about adjustments, torque specs and testing/troubleshooting procedures will be in there. Anyone who works on their own machines should have one. First thing I would do is just take the carb apart and see if there is anything that could be causing the float to hang up, dirt, gum, or some other type of debris. -
2006 Artic Cat stutters and now has quit
DirtDemon replied to tnwalkersu's topic in Arctic Cat ATV Forum
Start with simple things, like the spark plug, or make sure your air filter is clean, check the vavles. Figure out if you are missing spark, not getting fuel, or don't have enough compression. -
Have you checked the vavles yet, if they are too tight, they don't close all the way.

Do you have a MySpace profile?
DirtDemon replied to quadcrazy's topic in General Talk - Anything Goes!
Don't like it myself, seems like they are trying to be more like facebook. Don't really care that much though, I log into my facebook and Myspace maybe once a month. -
A shop will rape you of your money. If you think you can do it yourself, you might as well try. As long as you have a good manual, and a mechanichal inclination, you should do ok. The most important part is keeping track of all the parts and where they go.

Take them apart and inspect the clutches, could be worn plates, discs or springs, could just be that things need to be cleaned up. The best way to figure it out is to actually look at the clutches.

2006 Arctic Cat DVX400 Blown engine?
DirtDemon replied to toomanytoys's topic in Arctic Cat ATV Forum
IMO, it's a good machine and worth fixing. If it were me, I would be looking for an '87 or newer LT-250R Quadracer motor to put in there. That's just me, the regular motor is a good motor too. Don't think that this is typical for these machines, they are regularly reliable. -
It couldn't hurt to call a dealer tech and ask them how to set it properly. Don't let them talk you into bringing it in to them. If they won't give up the answer, get a factory Suzuki repair manual, it has all the info that the dealers do, and it is cheaper than an hour of their labor. The crappy thing here is, you need that to be correct before you can even begin to address any other problems. Can you access the screw with the throttle body on the quad? Would it be possible to adjust it with the engine running? That would be ideal because if you can't find the info, you could just set it to 1 1/2 or 2 turns out from seated and fine tune it with the motor running. Were you having other problems before your kids started messing with the machine. If you think the injector may be part of the problem, you can take it out and inspect it visually. I have heard of people having problems with cracked injectors. Also, there is a temp sensor in the airbox, make sure the plug is secure and the wires aren't damaged. Probably wouldn't hurt to check wiring on any thing you may think is not working properly. I know I have found several wires on my LT-R that have wear spots on the insulation and I have had to tape them up. Good luck.

The clutches are pretty much the same on both those machines, my guess is that there is really no adjustment procedure for them. Clutch adjusments usually pertain to manual clutches and sometimes belt drive systems. I think you are looking at more of a repair or replcace scenario if you are having clutch problems. What exactly are the problems that you are having? I'll be changing the thread title a little for more specific search response.

It could have been a killer pic, but it was taken from too far away with a crappy camera, but it is still kind of cool I guess.
