  2. Welcome to the site, I share your passion for riding. Untill June 25th, I have been riding at least every weekend for the last 4 years or so. The only reason I am not riding now is because of an accident that I had where I separated my right shoulder, broke my scapula and 2 ribs on top of some serious bruising and muscle strains. I must admit, I am a bit jealous of your machine. The 525XC is would be my quad of choice if I were to buy a new one. I have had an opportunity to ride the 505SX, and I must say that KTM has made some amazing machines. I will have to live with what I have for the time being, but I thing that the 525XC will be my next purchase.
  3. You probably just need to clean the carbs better. They need to be completely disassembled and every nook, cranny, and orifice needs to be cleaned. The air screws should be removed so the pilot circuits can be properly cleaned. The jets also need to be cleaned out well.
  4. I would start by inspecting the rear brakes and draining the oil in the rear diff, check for any metal debris. It sounds to me like there is something floating around in the rear diff and getting jammed between the ring and pinion. I think a rear brake problem is less likely, but still plausible. Is that machine full time 4wd? If so, I find it odd that the problem only affects the rear wheels unless you have a disconnect on the front driveline.
  5. Hello Mowerman, and welcome to the site. Could you please give some more info on the machine, year, make, model and engine size. This will be helpfull for us to help you with your problem, and is also required per forum guidelines. That being said, the thing that makes the slide, or "piston" as you call it move,is the throttle cable. Now the problem could be in the cable itself, the throttle assembly, or where the cable attatches to either the linkage or to the carb slide. Depending on what kind of machine you have, the cable will either attatch to linkage that operates the slide or it will attatch directly to the top of the slide. The only way you will figure out for sure what is wrong, is to find the problem. Lucky for you, the problem will be easily identified as soon as you see it. I would start by taking the cover off the throttle assembly first. If you find no problem there, I would trace the throttle cable to the carb and inspect where the cable attatches to the carb. If the cable is intact, and moves along with movement of the throttle lever, then the problem likely lies in the carb itself.

  8. If it runs, but won't idle when it is warm, it wouldn't be because of any thermal shutdown protection. If there was a thermal shutdown, the machine would not run at all. I would first try adjusting the pilot screw and see if it helps. Does the machine run ok other than not idling when warm?
  9. Sorry to hear things aren't working out. If you can get that little Honda off your hands without losing too much, the Suzuki LT 80 is an excellent machine. My younger brother had one when we were kids, it was always reliable and worked flawlessly for the years that we had it. It is a good bit larger than the Honda 70, but that also means your son would have room to grow on it. Parts are still available and the two stroke engine is much easier to work on.
  10. For what it's worth, I would have told you save your $50 and use it to buy a repair manual and do the job yourself. Mainly because I can't stand paying someone to do something I know I can do myself. Besides, that $50-60 quote probably would have turned into $80-90+ real quick. So I say good kudos to you for doing the right thing and keeping your money.

  12. Yes, you have to split the engine cases to get the crankshaft out. Pop that bad boy off and look to see if you can tell whether the woodruff key is intact. If you need to get the flywheel off, get a puller, it's not worth damaging the flywheel by trying to shortcut it.
  13. The starter is an obsolete part, and cannot be found at a parts dealer, online or otherwise. Your best bet IMO is to search atv salvage yards online. The starter from a 110 is has a different part #, but they are also obsolete, so it really doesn't matter much if it did fit. The engine design hasn't changed much, so there is a chance that the recoil starter off of a '93 or newer TRX 90 may fit, but you may have to use the entire mechanism, including the innermost pulley. There is also the possibility that the electric starting system off a newer chinese atv could be adapted to your motor since most of those small chinese machines use engines that are literal copies of old Honda technology. Do your research and good luck.
  14. You might try adjusting the pilot screw to a leaner position. Or just turn the idle up.
  15. This site carries an aftermarket boot, I don't know if it is any better, but they claim it is cheaper than OEM. From what I understand, the inner boots wearing out is just something that you have to deal with on those machines. http://www.atvworks.com/
  16. Sounds like you have a bad CDI. They aren't cheap, so I would test all the other ignition components first. If you don't have a repair manual, buy one, there will be simple tests in there to check the coil and such. It will also have a troubleshooting guide that you may find helpful. Also, check your wiring for loose connections and bad grounds. It also wouldn't hurt to pull the plug the next time the machine dies on you, ground it against the motor and check for spark, just to comfirm that the problem is in the ignition.
  17. It is 12 years old and had been moving a 500-600lbs of quad and rider around for a long time, it will stretch.   19. Agreed, sounds like a dead short, close to the battery. I would check the battery cables, and the starter, if the hot starter terminal is broken off, or a chunk of metal is grounding it out, it could be shorting there.
  20. Can you verify the mileage, or is is this just the word of the owner? If the mileage is verifiable, I would go with the '03 since it would have less wear and tear on it and they are basically the same.
  21. I will say this again, ride it until it shuts down, take the plug out, ground it against the motor and turn the bike over to check for spark. If there is no spark, obviously you have an ignition problem, if that is the case, I would still say that the CDI is the most likely culprit. Again, there are some tests you can do to check the other components. I posted some links for repair manuals in a previous post, on top of having test specs and procedures for your ignition components, they will have a troubleshooting guide that may help you track down the problem. If there is still spark after the machine stops running, then your problem is probably and interruprion in the fuel flow. That could mean debris in the fuel tank or carb, a stuck float or a fuel tank that is not ventilating properly.

  23. What makes you think that it is the spark and not a fuel problem? You may just need to turn your idle up a bit. If the machine has been sitting for a bit, then you might want to consider Hondagirl's advise and check the carb, clean it if needed.
  24. The arms have different part #'s, but are similar in design. The shock part #'s are also different. The only thing that is the same is the a-arm bushings. They may fit, the differences may be little to none, but the part #'s are different. I am also inclined to agree with Stoopidbot, check your frame for damage, if it is messed up, it won't be as simple as just bolting new parts on. I have first hand experience with that one. I messed up an a-arm and had to re-fabricate the mounts to just to compensate for the slightest frame damage.
  25. Could be because of blow by or just inadequate crankcase ventilation. A compression test will tell you if it is from compression blowing by the rings.
